Mō te tūnga | About the role Defence Digital Group provides the core ICT services that underpin New Zealand Defence Force operations.We are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. This integral role within our Defence Cyber Security Centre (DCSC), has some key accountabilities:
  • Using your experience in managing operational cyber activities, you will ensure efficient and effective delivery of operations and capability to protect systems, information and personnel by providing strategic direction and oversight to the DCSC's leaders.The role must ensure the capability of each team is at the necessary level of resource and capability.
  • Stakeholder management and planning skills enable you to support the cyber defence functions of the Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Chief Data Officer and the Chief of Information Warfare. You will deliver this through good communications, being intelligence led and continuously improving the skills of the DCSC and tools. Investments in resources need to be well managed and targeted at the requirements of this stakeholder group. Delivery of strategic and tactical intelligence, vulnerability and penetration testing, monitoring and response as well as liaison with partner agencies are all services delivered by the DCSC.
  • Being a forward-thinker, your engagement in strategic discussions about the future direction of NZDF's Cyber Security will move NZDF ahead of the game. Spanning hybrid environments and IoT systems, the role manages a complex environment. It has to remain abreast of changes to the threats to each environment from script kiddies to nation-state military actors. Monitoring capabilities and responses need to counter those. Using your negotiation skills you need to ensure support of Product Owners and engineers and you get the funding required through annual budgets and Ministry of Defence led projects.
Due to the nature of this role, there are some vital skills and experiences you must have.
  • Minimum of 12 years in an IT/Operations role with a focus on IT Security, of which 3+ years' experience is managing a team of staff from various technical and non-technical disciplines.
  • Experience in cyber operations, ideally in a military, partner or OGA environments.
  • The ability to conceptualise and develop innovative solutions.
  • Sound planning, prioritisation and time management skills for effective management of complex and competing priorities.
  • The ability to deal with ambiguity adapting to the continuous evolution of cyber threats.

  • To obtain this level of clearance, you must have a background history of fifteen (15) years that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
