Status: Full time (37.5 hours per week), Permanent. Salary range: Competitive and based on experience and qualifications Location: Dublin The position: Ireland’s latest Climate Action Plan (CAP 2024) commits to increase the proportion of renewable electricity to up to 80% by 2030. We are looking to recruit an accomplished and driven consultant with extensive professional experience in the Ireland electricity industry, specifically to lead TNEI Ireland’s portfolio of technical grid work. You will be able to test yourself in a wide variety of capacities, for many different clients while also developing our power system capabilities to an even higher technical level. We are growing significantly at the moment, and you will therefore be able to have direct influence on the company’s direction and strategy. Given the intimate size of the current team, a role with TNEI Ireland will provide exposure to all aspects of the business and offer a variety of areas for skill development and career progression. Our power systems team already has developed a strong reputation and delivering major grid projects for an appealingly diverse, client base. Constantly adapting and responding to industry needs, we are continuously improving. As a result, we are looking for a highly capable and motivated Specialist Consultant with an eye for detail, ambition to be top of their field and a gift for leading through inspiration, vision and collaboration. As our new power system specialist you will be part of a highly skilled and dedicated team of power system engineers delivering solutions for system operators, policy makers and influencers as well developers of renewable energy. The primary role is to lead and deliver a range of technical and commercial projects relating to power system planning, operation, innovation and technology. The role requires extensive experience and strong understanding of the technical performance and technical analysis of the Irish power system, energy policy and regulation. The right candidate will be expected to develop innovative and bespoke solutions for our clients and guide the wider industry. Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Expertise in understanding the all-island power system – both from a historical perspective and how the power system is likely to evolve.
  • Manage large, complex, and multiple projects acting as Project Manager where required.
  • Deliver projects to a high level of technical competency.
  • Improve existing tools and methodologies as well as developing new approaches as the industry evolves.
  • Support the management and development of client relationships and partnerships with other consultancies and industry bodies.
  • Support the preparation of tenders, proposals and submissions.
  • Mentor, train and supervise junior staff.
  • Where required, represent TNEI Ireland at conferences, webinars, exhibits and industry working groups.
  • Contribute to business strategic objectives and develop multi-year business plans.
Requirements: Essential requirements include:
  • Strong scripting skills and knowledge of the typical power simulation applications used within industry.
  • 10+ years’ relevant experience in Irish power system modelling.
  • A minimum of an Electronic/Electrical Engineering degree, or equivalent.
  • Advanced power system technology knowledge: o Substation equipment and busbar design, o Overhead line, underground/subsea cables and transformers o STATCOM, SVC, reactors and capacitors, o Power control technologies and dynamic line rating, o Generators, loads, battery storage and interconnectors
  • Excellent technical skills and knowledge of power system modelling and analysis techniques: o Load flow and short circuit analysis o Constraint analysis
  • Extensive experience in the use of the following software/simulation packages: o PSSE o Python
  • Knowledge of how power markets work and impact grid modelling.
  • Ability to guide, persuade and influence through developed skills of communication and diplomacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and adapts a suitable approach when dealing with internal and external parties.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Commercial awareness and up to date with energy policy and regulation.
  • Proven ability to provide outstanding project management, including scoping, budgeting, scheduling, and quality control.
  • A self-starter with proven ability to develop business and manage both client relationships and team members.
  • Proficiency in numerical analytics, data management and automation
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritise under pressure of deadlines, while working independently.
  • You have high ambitions for your work and your career as well as high expectations for the people you work with.
  • Legally able to work in Ireland.
  • Developed capability in carrying out dynamic/stability analysis, harmonic analysis and EMT studies.
  • Experience in the use of one or more of the following software packages: PowerFactory, IPSA, SINCAL, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, DSATools, PowerWorld, PSLF.
  • Experience performing Cost Benefit Analysis, Least-Worst Regret, and working with financial metrics such as NPV, IRR, payback period etc.
  • A keen sense and understanding of the future challenges facing the Irish energy sector, in particular.
  • Prior experience of working in the power and energy sector, particularly renewables.
  • Interest in coding skills, especially python.
  • Experience of using CadnaA.
  • IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.
