About Blackwater Mine: Situated 73 kilometres south-east of Emerald, Blackwater is the second-largest open-cut metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin. This long-life operation began in 1967 and has grown to become one of the longest coal mines in the Southern Hemisphere, with a strike length of 80 kilometres. Blackwater extracts high quality metallurgical and thermal coal for the export market using truck and shovel, as well as loader and dragline.

About the Role We are seeking an experienced Responsible Dams and Tailings Engineer to join The Whitehaven Coal family within the Engineering team at Blackwater mine. The Responsible Dams Engineer will be accountable for the assurance and integrity of the mines water and tailings storage facilities through engineering governance to manage the risk of dam failure.

This role will be based on site at Blackwater (preferred) or Brisbane, with frequent travel required

What You'll Do

Track conformance of day-to-day operation against design intent and raise issues when monitored parameters deviate from design values; Advise on compliance with the dam operational design intent, applicable dam safety, regulations, polices and guidelines; Implement dam operation and inspection training programs; Maintain dam management records, and ensure appropriate information is available for training; Communicate effectively with external consulting engineers, advising of potential changes to the dams, surveillance and instrumentation, and work with them on modifications; What You'll Bring

Bachelor degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining or other tertiary qualifications relating to water management such as Hydrology, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering; Experience in Tailings or water dam management, dam assessment, general water management, or hydrological assessment; Previous mining experience is an asset but not essential; Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels and disciplines; and An open Australian driving licence is required .
