About the Position
The Director, Investments is at the front line of IAF's investment activities. The Director, Investments will lead investment opportunities to execution while playing an active role in providing support to investee companies. They qualify investment opportunities and manage the due diligence process to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the investment opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Ownership
Responsible for actively managing a pipeline of investment opportunities and playing an active role in sourcing deal flow for IAF
Identify opportunities appropriate to IAF and lead the end-to-end deal process from sourcing to investment execution
Presents investment opportunities to the IAF Investment Committee and leads the development of investment memoranda to relevant parties
Portfolio Management
Oversees and assesses the outcomes of IAF investments, actively involved in taking opportunities to the next phase of growth, development or follow-on investment
Interacts with investee companies to develop a strategy and tactical plan to ensure achievement of operational milestones necessary to secure subsequent financing or become self-sufficient
Monitors reporting from investee companies through exit of IAF's investment, helping companies to achieve scale and enable success
Ecosystem Engagement
Provides coaching and guidance to less experienced members of the team, enabling a dynamic and results-driven work culture
Engages and coordinates with ecosystem partners and investment communities with a view to developing consistent sources of deal flow and opportunities for initial and follow-on investments
Contributes to and maintains a network of technology and domain experts that can be called upon to help evaluate a wide range of deal flow and assist with due diligence
Qualifications
Minimum bachelor's degree in business, engineering or equivalent
Bachelor's degree + professional designation (MBA, PEng, CBV, CFA, CPA, etc.) an asset
8+ years of related work experience
Investment experience with preference given to experience in assessing early-stage technology companies
Strong business development and collaboration skills (investment syndicates)
Experience with corporate governance and legal structures
Superior negotiations skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Personal integrity and professionalism
