You will have a strong news sense and ability to cover breaking and live news across the South Island that will engage our audience across the region and, importantly, all of New Zealand. About You: RESPONSIBILITIES: Journalism skills:

  • Write fast, clear, error-free and compelling stories on breaking and live news.
  • Build a wide base of relevant contacts within the emergency services, councils, government departments, and other areas that will assist in your news gathering.
  • Generate unique and compelling story ideas to create content that beats the competition and wins audiences.
  • Have a sound local knowledge and a wide awareness of news and current topics of interest.
  • When filing for digital/print, include multiple images, video, SEO headlines, related links, social embeds, classifications, tagging and other elements as required. Capture images and video for your own reports when needed and save images into archive systems as instructed.
  • When filing for radio, prepare tight scripts and edit audio into compelling reports. Deliver voice reports or live Q&A sessions from news scenes.
  • Ensure any premium content is thoroughly planned and well-executed.
  • Help promote NZME’s web and social presence, e.g. provide live social coverage during breaking news events and amplify your own and colleagues’ stories over social channels.
Planning and organisational skills:
  • Work quickly and efficiently, managing time and prioritising to meet all deadlines.
  • With support and training, act as News Director when required.
  • Operate with an NZME-wide mentality, fostering strong communication between the group’s newsrooms and ensuring all needs of the network are met.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
  • You’ll have a relevant qualification and at least one years’ experience in newsroom environment.
  • You’ll be comfortable in print / digital / broadcasting environments.
  • You’ll be an effective communicator, relating confidently to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be adaptable in dealing with change.
