Principal Design Engineer - Overhead Lines UK (Hybrid or Fully Remote Working) Competitive salary + benefits package Our client is a leading consultancy who provide engineering and professional planning services to the power sector. They specialise in the design and survey of Overhead Lines, Underground Cables, and Substation Systems for major power transmission infrastructure the UK and internationally, working closely with the likes of National Grid. We are now looking for an ambitious and dynamic individual with a passion for Electricity Transmission and Distribution Projects to join our client as a Principal Design Engineer. This role is an excellent opportunity for growth and to really make a name for yourself in a collaborative environment. The role As a Principal Design Engineer, you will be part of a project team responsible for developing and delivering engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering design, (33 kV and above). This will include but not limited to Structure Foundations, Conductors and Conductor Systems, Structural Design both concept and detailed design. Job purpose;
- Undertake and be responsible for the design and specification of steel overhead line structures and overhead line design systems.
- Take responsibility for project management and ensure the achievement of all deliverables in a timely manner.
- Lead the Project Design Team and provide engineering design support to the development team during NDP4.2 and 4.3, including advice, where necessary, regarding the need for other specialist resources.
- Co-ordinate the FEED process and ensuring co-operation, communication and co-ordination between designers is occurring.
- Ensuring a Design Programme is prepared, maintained & implemented.
- Take responsibility for all Health and Safety and CDM issues arising on projects and take a lead role in the development of OHL designs and ensure compliance with legislation.
- Provide technical expertise to the company, reviewing and development of company systems and provision of technical training as appropriate including the mentoring of Junior Engineers.
- Monitor and undertake day-to-day management of all design activities, verification of all work undertaken by your design teams and ensuring compliance with company Quality Procedures.
- Provide site supervision to others and to verify and approve proposed work procedures, designs, drawings, and method statements prior to work commencing.
- Responsible for the development of preliminary and detailed design and delivery of projects by leading the technical aspects of overhead lines and all other associated equipment.
- Analyse client’s specifications and agree design requirements.
- Analyse and resolve design issues.
- Provide calculations and /or reports to justify design results.
- Liaise where necessary with clients to ensure satisfactory progress and quality.
- Take responsibility for the delivery of a portfolio of Structural OHL projects, ensuring adherence to quality, time, and budget, as well as relevant standards and client specifications, including:
- Accept ownership of work to be done:
- Ensure all designs are completed accurately and the design office is working to the latest specifications.
- Submit monthly progress reports to the Line Manager.
- Co-ordinate and liaise with all other departments, disciplines, external agencies, and authorities to ensure all design work is in accordance with the clients agreed brief, programme.
- Ensure design reviews take place and that work is completed in accordance with the delivery programme.
- Preparation of tender costs and advising on timescales/lead times
- Preparation of work instructions and evaluation and collation of information and preparation of work packs
- Responsible for the delivery of Conceptual and Detailed Design solutions
- Liaise where necessary with Engineers and Clients to ensure satisfactory progress and quality.
- Writing Project Report as required
- Monitoring project hours and costs against budgets
- Ensure all drawings are completed accurately to the latest specifications as applicable.
- Support and contribute to company databases, knowledge pools and resource libraries as appropriate.
- Carry out reasonable duties as directed by Line Manager or Nominated Director.

- In addition to undertaking design and design management duties on OHL projects you may also be required to work on, or coordinate other aspects of the projects, such as constructability, access, civil, geotechnical, rail, survey etc. Any such work is to be agreed with Line Manager.
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related engineering discipline, such as Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. A-level or equivalent in Maths.
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional body, such as MICE, MIStructE, MIET
- Ideally, competent in the use of industry software such as PLS CADD, PLS Tower, SAPS or other similar packages. Working knowledge of relevant national and industry standards such as BS EN 50341, the ENATS suite and client specific.
- Typically, 2 years minimum post-graduate industry experience.
- Ideally, 3 – 5 years’ experience with National Grid OHL projects, or 5 – 10 years’ general OHL industry experience in the UK.
