Team overview The team is focused on the implementation of LaSalle’s Asia Pacific sustainability strategy which focuses on climate change, environmental management, responsible consumption, social value and relevant related governance programs. The team manages sustainability factors on a portfolio of approximately $14.5bn to protect and enhance investment returns for clients from around the globe. Role overview This role is responsible for defining our Asia Pacific sustainability strategy, objectives and philosophy and driving a path to execution on appropriate programmes in collaboration with senior leadership and other stakeholders. This role will be a key member of the firm’s Global Sustainability Committee, co-chair the Asia Pacific’s Sustainability Committee and will lead the Asia Pacific Sustainability Taskforce. The successful candidate will participate in industry events and consult with external stakeholders such as investors/clients, tenants, industry organizations, and government bodies on sustainability issues. Internally, this role will be responsible for training and implementing sustainability related best practices that will be utilised by professionals across business functions, especially Asset Management, Acquisitions and Fund Management. The role spans both direct and indirect real estate as well as real estate debt investments across the six Asia Pacific countries where LaSalle operates (China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Australia). The successful candidate will manage Asia Pacific’s sustainability team, which currently comprises three employees located in Singapore and Japan, in leading the Asia Pacific business in creating programs and processes that provide sustainability related value for our investors and assists LaSalle with the transition to a decarbonized economy. Role & responsibilities
  • Responsible for working with the Asset and Property Management teams to develop programs for regional-level, asset-level and fund-level sustainability initiatives, including decarbonization strategies, renewable energy strategies, climate resilience strategies, certifications, and energy/water/waste efficiency projects
  • Act as a resource to the Asset and Fund Management teams on initiatives, such as advancing internal education and awareness of climate change related programs.
  • Participate in and/or lead research initiatives and develop resources that help the firm make well-informed sustainability-related investment decisions at the property and portfolio levels.
  • Responsible for collection, quality and timeliness of data needed for reporting and management analysis, and, working with the Business Technology professionals, assist in the continual improvement of related sustainability related business technology systems.
  • Responsible for the Asia Pacific business’ GRESB submissions, sustainability management programs and consultants.
  • Prepare and make presentations to clients and assist with client sustainability-related reporting.
  • Represent the firm at external events to elevate the firm’s profile in the industry while also strategically participating in relevant industry standard-setting initiatives.
  • Represent the Asia Pacific business on the Global Sustainability Committee, helping to shape the firm’s overall sustainability strategy and execution thereof.
  • Co-Chair the Asia Pacific Sustainability Committee and Chair the Sustainability Taskforce
  • Work with stakeholders on implementation of key initiatives; ensure consistency with LaSalle’s global strategy and values, while also appropriately adapting to local requirements and/or constraints.
  • Assess the sustainability and financial attributes of potential and completed environmental and social projects for potential acquisitions and standing investments, including existing buildings, renovations/refurbishments and new developments.
  • Manage the development and roll-out of educational and marketing materials that align with the senior leadership’s vision and the organisation’s broader mission statement.
  • Present regular updates on ESG progress to the Asia Pacific Sustainability Committee.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and various internal departments (Fund Management, Asset Management, Acquisitions, Debt, Indirect, HR, Investor Relations, Research & Strategy, Corporate Communications, Business Technology, and others as needed) to lead multi-disciplined teams on sustainability initiatives and promote throughout the organization.
  • Serve as an internal thought leader on sustainability trends, practices and technologies.
  • Manage, develop and mentor junior team members to provide them with a career path. 
  • Attract and retain high quality junior team members.
Experience, Qualifications and Competencies Required
  • 10-12+ experience in Real Estate industry with at least 3-5 years recent sustainability experience preferably within Asia Pacific (including multiple countries within Asia Pacific).
  • BA/BS degree, or higher, in environmental science, real estate, finance, accounting, business, engieering or related field with strong record of academic achievement. Sustainability related formal education / sustainability certifications are a plus.
  • Project management and team management experience, including ability to organise and direct high-quality work.
  • Strong financial and analytical ability with solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills; skilled in PowerPoint presentations
  • Strong ability to work independently, lead a team, and collaborate across functions and other regions.
  • Proactive thinking with detail-oriented and creative problem-solving approach.
  • Proficiency with real estate sustainability certification standards such as LEED, WELL, Fitwel, CASBEE, GreenMark, NABERS, and others.
  • Experience with GRESB and carbon reporting standards.
  • Knowledge of regulatory environments and resulting impacts on the firm’s investment activities.
  • Candidate to be ideally based in Tokyo or Singapore. 
  • Proficient English required (verbal and written), Proficient Japanese optional.
