The key duties of the position include Reporting to the Executive General Manager, Compliance, Enforcement and Surveillance Division, the General Manager - Market Surveillance, will be responsible for the overall leadership of the Branch and will work closely with the Board, EGM and other senior managers in relevant areas across the organisation.
  • drive and deliver improvements to the branch's approaches to market analysis and reporting including ways the AER manages workflows and processes for market monitoring and reporting. This includes the AER's capability to understand and report on new and emerging issues, including the activities of energy market participants in financial markets.
  • contribute to the AER's data governance by informing the future development of its data sources, systems, analytics, and technical capacity across wholesale and contract markets. Ensure close working relationships with the Chief Data Strategist and team.
  • work collaboratively with the Compliance & Enforcement Branch to identify and respond to market participant's non-compliance that may lead to consumer and/or market harms.
  • build sustainable and productive professional relationships with key stakeholders at all levels, engaging closely with a range of government, industry and consumer stakeholders. This includes ACCC colleagues working on gas and electricity inquiries.
About you In order to succeed in the role, you will have:
  • high level management and leadership skills (including intellectual leadership) and superior people management skills, including supporting learning and capability development.
  • a proven ability to achieve organisational outcomes, build organisational capability and manage risk to ensure government objectives are achieved.
  • excellent stakeholder management, communication, negotiation and influencing skills, including the ability to represent and negotiate on behalf of the department.
  • an outstanding track record in leading and delivering high quality advice in a complex and sensitive environment, including adopting innovative approaches to difficult issues as appropriate.
  • substantial knowledge and demonstrated experience in government relations and regulation.
  • knowledge of Australian electricity and gas markets; the role, purpose and objectives of the AER and the complex political and stakeholder environment within which the AER operates; or demonstrated ability to undertake similar work and an ability to quickly acquire technical expertise.
  • relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent experience.
