- The Director, Legal Counsel reports to the Vice President, Global Operations and HR Counsel and provides in-house legal services to the Southeast Asia operations and human resources functions located in Johor, Malaysia. The ideal candidate is a collaborative attorney with strong experience in labor and employment and commercial transactions. He or she must possess excellent legal and business judgment and must be able to demonstrate success balancing the need to limit risk with the goal of supporting fast-paced growth and innovation. The candidate must be able to work independently but collaboratively within a fast-paced, high-performance environment, providing legal advice and guidance related to a wide range of labor and commercial matters. The role will also support other business needs, large-scale special projects and compliance related activities as needed
- Support Human Resources on all aspects of employment relations and employee benefits. Advise management and clients in Human Resources on matters including, but not limited to, hiring, training, policies, handbooks, and benefits.
- Conduct investigations arising from employee complaints regarding workplace misconduct, including, but not limited to, investigations of wage and hour compliance, alleged discriminatory or retaliatory conduct.
- Make presentations and conduct trainings on various topics related to employment law.
- Liaise with outside counsel to support immigration applications of non-Malaysian citizens employed by Insulet.
- Draft, review, negotiate and provide guidance on a wide variety of commercial agreements including, but not limited to, sales/purchase agreements, software licensing agreements, competitive bids, supply agreements, and recruitment agreements.
- Work with Legal colleagues to continuously improve contract structure and processes as well as implementation and adherence to best practices within both the Legal department and the company.
- Periodically and proactively assess legal and compliance risk exposures for the business, and develop and implement risk mitigation initiatives including procedures, policies, and forms development.
- Support compliance activities, including government compliance, mandatory disclosure obligations, employee misconduct investigations and implementation of appropriate remedial measures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- LLB Honors degree from a recognized and leading university in Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom or Australia .
- Admitted to the Malaysian Bar
- 8 to 10 years of broad-based legal experience in relevant areas such as labor and employment, commercial contracting, litigation, government contracts, compliance and transactional work.
- Experience in either a major law firm or in-house in a corporate legal department.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, corporate/in-house work environment and manage competing priorities while remaining a valued and respected member of business teams.
- Well-developed business acumen and the ability to leverage his/her business judgment and exceptional legal skills to negotiate and close commercial transactions in support of Southeast Asia operations.
- Ability to influence and lead at all levels of the company.
- Proven experience solving both practical and multi-variable problems and challenges.
- Expertise in negotiating and drafting all types of agreements and negotiating to resolution difficult or unique issues.
- Knowledge of local privacy laws and regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
- Highest standards of integrity and good judgment.
- A self-starter who thrives when presented with challenges, is very productive and has the motivation to assume increasing and significant responsibility.
- A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected, as is the ability to develop strong relationships with internal clients.
- Experience supporting a manufacturing operation is a plus, but not required.
- General office environment, may sit for long periods of time.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
