Job Description

The CloudInfrastructure Lead role is responsible for managing and monitoring all installed systems and infrastructure in the sites. These will include: installing upgrades, troubleshooting and installation of hardware, servers, cabling, components and accessories in compliance to the organization’s standards; installing, configuring, testing and maintaining operating systems, application software and system management tools to proactively ensure the highest level of systems and infrastructure availability and connectivity; creating, planning and implementing detailed deployment designs as well as maintaining technical implementation documentation on existing services and systems. Within the SFIA profile, the Infrastructure Lead must demonstrate Level 4 responsibilities, i.e. Enable the competencies outlined.
  • Information Security
    • Communicates information security risks and issues to business managers and others.
    • Performs basic risk assessments for small information systems.
    • Contributes to vulnerability assessments.
    • Applies and maintains specific security controls as required by organisational policy and local risk assessments. Investigates suspected attacks.
    • Responds to security breaches in line with security policy and records the incidents and action taken.
  • Designs computing and communications equipment, taking into account the target environment, performance, security and sustainability requirements.
  • Translates logical designs into physical designs, and delivers technical prototypes of proposed components for approval by customer and execution by technicians.
  • Designs tests to measure performance of prototypes and production output against specification and inform iterative development.
  • Installs or removes hardware and/or software, using supplied installation instructions and tools including, where appropriate, handover to the client. Conducts tests, corrects malfunctions, and documents results in accordance with agreed procedures.
  • Reports details of all hardware/software items that have been installed and removed so that configuration management records can be updated.
  • Provides assistance to users in a professional manner following agreed procedures for further help or escalation.
  • Reviews change requests.
  • Maintains accurate records of user requests, contact details and outcomes.
  • Contributes to the development of installation procedures and standards.
  • Monitors service delivery performance metrics and liaises with managers and customers to ensure that service level agreements are not breached without the stakeholders being given the opportunity of planning for a deterioration in service.
  • Engages with project management to confirm that products developed meet the service acceptance criteria and are to the required standard.
  • Feeds into change management processes.
  • Configuration management
    • Applies tools, techniques and processes to track, log and correct information related to configuration items.
    • Verifies and approves changes ensuring protection of assets and components from unauthorised change, diversion and inappropriate use.
    • Ensures that users comply with identification standards for object types, environments, processes, lifecycles, documentation, versions, formats, baselines, releases and templates.
    • Performs audits to check the accuracy of information and undertakes any necessary corrective action under direction.
  • Asset management
    • Controls IT assets in one or more significant areas, ensuring that administration of the acquisition, storage, distribution, movement and disposal of assets is carried out.
    • Produces and analyzes registers and histories of authorized assets (including secure master copies of the software, documentation, data, licenses and agreements for supply, warranty and maintenance), and verifies that all these assets are in a known state and location.
    • Acts to highlight and resolve potential instances of unauthorized assets such as unlicensed copies of software.
  • Security administration
    • Maintains security administration processes and checks that all requests for support are dealt with according to agreed procedures.
    • Provides guidance in defining access rights and privileges.
    • Investigates security breaches in accordance with established procedures and recommends required actions and supports / follows up to ensure these are implemented.
  • Penetration testing
    • Maintains current knowledge of malware attacks, and other cyber security threats.
    • Creates test cases using in-depth technical analysis of risks and typical vulnerabilities.
    • Produces test scripts, materials and test packs to test new and existing software or services.
    • Specifies requirements for environment, data, resources and tools.
    • Interprets, executes and documents complex test scripts using agreed methods and standards. Records and analyzes actions and results.
    • Reviews test results and modifies tests if necessary. Provides reports on progress, anomalies, risks and issues associated with the overall project.
    • Reports on system quality and collects metrics on test cases.
    • Provides specialist advice to support others.
  • IT Infrastructure
    • Carries out agreed operational procedures, including infrastructure configuration, installation and maintenance.
    • Uses infrastructure management tools to collect and report on load and performance statistics and to automate the provisioning, testing and deployment of new and changed infrastructure.
    • Contributes to the implementation of maintenance and installation work.
    • Uses standard procedures and tools to carry out defined system backups, restoring data where necessary.
    • Identifies operational problems and contributes to their resolution.
  • Network support
    • Identifies and resolves network problems following agreed procedures.
    • Uses network management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics.
    • Carries out agreed network maintenance tasks.
  • Contract management
    • Sources and collects contract performance data (such as pricing and supply chain costs), and monitors performance against KPIs.
    • Identifies and reports under-performance and develops opportunities for improvement.
    • Monitor compliance with the Terms and Conditions and take appropriate steps to address non-compliance.
    • Pro-actively manages risk and reward mechanisms in the contract.
    • Monitors progress against business objectives specified in the business case.
    • Identifies where change is required, and plans for variations.
    • In consultation with stakeholders, ensure that change management protocols are implemented.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer software/computer systems engineering, computer systems and networks, electrical/electronic engineering, mathematics, network security management;
  • Masters or postgraduate degree is a plus
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a Network Engineer or related role, and 2 years supervising junior level engineers
  • Ability to design and implement cloud infrastructure
  • Knowledge of various IT ecosystems
  • Proficiency in programming and coding languages
  • Knowledge of one or more cloud environments, such as Azure Cloud, Google Cloud, or AWS EC2
  • Any relevant Network Engineer certifications such as:
    • CompTIA A+ Certification
    • CompTIA Network+ Certification
    • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): Windows Server
    • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE): Core Infrastructure
    • VMware Certified Professional – Network Virtualization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of network topologies and implementations (e.g. VPN, LAN, WAN, Wireless)
  • Experience as technical lead for a major technology implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IT network design and governance
