Overview

The Lead Power Relay Technician primary role is to performs as a fully-skilled Journeyman Relay Technician for all types of relay and substation automation installation, adjustment, maintenance, calibration and commissioning in the shop or field. Frequently provides work direction to lower classified Relay Maintenance personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities

Performs preventive maintenance, installs, commissions, calibrates, tests, repairs and troubleshoots protective relaying, substation automation, control, alarm, metering, and peripheral systems using various types of test and calibration equipment. Equipment used includes three phase computerized and automated relay and meter test equipment, in addition to the standard electrical test equipment.

Troubleshoots, and maintains, synchronization systems and voltage regulation.

Frequently provides work direction for two lower classified personnel on assignments of moderate complexity.

Revises existing systems and equipment to conform to verbal instructions, revised drawings and work orders.

Revises drawings to keep them current and reflect the actual situation in the field. Forwards the information for incorporation into company records. Maintains a continuing up-to-date audit of all equipment in his area of responsibility including; nameplate data, commissioning records conditions, settings, automation configuration, past malfunctions and corrections required. Documents conditions found, adjustments made calibration settings, final condition of equipment, etc., for forwarding to the Relay/Automation Engineers and incorporation into their records.

Practices good housekeeping, including jobsite cleanup, conforms to safety standards, rules and practices and requires it in others.

Performs other miscellaneous tasks as directed by the Supervisor.

Uploads / downloads and documents relays and test equipment software settings and tools.

Minimum Requirements

8 years' experience in power relays, substation automation and control circuitry.

Fluent command of the English language, both oral and written. Knowledge of basic computer application.

Working knowledge of power system installations in assigned area and pertinent portions of the Producing Instruction Manual, General Instruction Manual Power Distribution Instructions, power relays, substation automation and control circuitry.

A thorough knowledge of the Safety Manual, electrical safety procedures and requirements with a confirmed and dedicated attitude towards safety and a proven determination to enforce safe work habits.

Ability to operate and interpret the results of all types of relay test and calibration equipment.

Ability to read and understand schematics, drawings, and instructions from manufacturers of various geographic locations and design standards.

Comprehensive knowledge of current transformers and potential transformers and their applications to protective relaying packages, controls, alarms, and indication signals.

Good working knowledge and the ability to interpret results of test equipment, portable metering, computerized three phase sets and specialty equipment used to analyze special problems that occur in the incumbent's area of responsibility.

Complete working knowledge of the major equipment within substations. This includes substation automation, controls, alarms and auxiliary equipment as it applies to the interface with relaying responsibilities.

Working knowledge of applicable electrical standers& codes.
