Teams meet 2-4 times yearly in interesting locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.We are hiring an Ubuntu Core Software Engineer to redefine the Linux experience in embedded environments with the smallest, most secure, and updatable OS in the Io T market. This role is ideal for a passionate software engineer interested in open source, Linux, security, and developer experience. It requires high technical skill with low-level OS, kernel, and device firmware.Our mission is to enable building robust solutions in Io T, automotive, aviation, and more, using a next-gen secure embedded Linux OS. We develop reliable device recovery mechanisms to simplify and standardize field operations for heterogeneous fleets.As part of the Ubuntu Core team, you'll design and implement software across various CPU architectures like ARM, RISC-V, and x86, working on boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage layout, device trees, kernel, and services.Build a meaningful career with top tech talent at Canonical, a growing international company.Location: Remote in the EMEA region The role entails: Writing high-quality code with unit tests for new features Debugging Linux system issues and fixing them Collaborating proactively with a distributed team Reviewing code from other engineers Discussing ideas and finding solutions Integrating diverse bootloaders and maintaining gadget snaps Working from home with global travel 2-4 times a year for events What we look for: Passion for technology and working with talented people Curiosity, flexibility, articulation, accountability Soft skills, passion, enterprising attitude, self-motivation Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar Experience with C, Golang, Shell Strong understanding of Linux, Debian or Ubuntu preferred Experience with Linux-capable devices like Raspberry Pi Interest or experience in low-level systems and security (e.g., bootloaders, systemd, firmware, TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM) Knowledge of Yocto is a plus What we offer: Distributed work environment with biannual in-person sprints USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget Annual compensation review Recognition rewards, holiday leave, parental leave Wellness programs and travel opportunities About Canonical: Canonical is a pioneering open source tech firm, publisher of Ubuntu, leading in AI, Io T, and cloud platforms.
