Electrical Technician Job Description, Duties, and Responsibilities


Electrical technicians are responsible for executing both predictive and planned preventive maintenance functions in a company.


His/her job description entails participating in independent maintenance related training activities organized by the field operations teams and coordinating shutdowns to ensure that failure rates and downtime are significantly reduced to minimize cost.


Electrical technicians mainly work in the maintenance department of a company where they are responsible for carrying out all field repairs with the whole of the company's manufacturing operations, which include Electrical, Mechanical, and Instrumentation.


The technician's role also includes participating in planning, ensuring effective spare parts management, and supervising continuous project improvement.


He/she performs process improvements, providing support and enhancement to the company's health, safety, and environmental system that conforms to the required legal and standard requirements.


His/her duties also involve contributing to maintenance standards and procedures, and also leading efforts on equipment standardization. He/she carries out major overhauls or outages of equipment to ensure best practices within the plant.


The electrical technician, working directly with the manufacturing operations team participates actively in daily shift meetings and assists in ensuring specified continuous improvement in the company's equipment and operations.


His/her work description entails providing direct response to maintenance needs and fixing them, including repairing pumps/exchangers, replacing fittings, and fixing instrumentation faults. He/she may also perform weld repairs as required.


Repairing or replacing items such as gaskets, compensators, seals, switches, circuit breakers, various motors, starters, and conducting fault finding procedures are part of an electrical technician's tasks.

Carry out maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of electrical, automation, and instrumentation of equipment applied by industrial motor controls, chemical feed systems, pump drives, and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system

Perform maintenance, repair, and upgrade of the Water Supply Division's electrical distribution infrastructure

Carry out thermography of electrical distribution panels and motor control

Troubleshoot problems by gathering and analyzing power quality data

Ensure longer life of obsolete equipment and save funds by carrying out detailed troubleshooting down to component levels

Requirements - Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge - Electrical Technician Role

Below are major requirements of the job, including the skills, qualities, education, etc. that you may have to satisfy to be eligible for an interview:


Possess High School Diploma or its equivalent qualification, GED and two years experience on the journey-level maintenance, repair, and industrial electrical installation works, or equivalent combination of experience, training, and education

Solid knowledge of electrical practices and theory, City procedures and policies, and microwave data and network

Strong knowledge of RTU/PLC software and programming methods, computer hardware maintenance techniques and methods, and state codes and NEC standards

Knowledge of NFPA Arc-Flash safety regulations, ladder logic and programmable logic controllers

Solid knowledge of calibration methods and standards, and ladder logic diagrams and schematics

Strong knowledge of practices and principles of system troubleshooting, and SCADA hardware and software systems

Exceptional skill in applying discretion, judgment, and initiative within established guidelines, rules, and procedures

Strong ability to define problems, determine facts, and draw accurate conclusions

Sound ability to manage situations needing fairness, diplomacy, sound judgment, and firmness

Strong ability to read and interpret schematics and blueprints and apply power and hand tools

Strong customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and in working with a personal computer and various relevant software tools

Strong ability to create and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, supervisors, suppliers, vendors, contractors, community groups, general public, and external public agencies; also knowledge of and ability to implement safe work practices.
