POSITION OVERVIEW

A Paralegal has responsibilities ranging from creating and filing documents to interacting with clients and assisting attorneys in whatever way they are needed. They also help with the discovery, investigating of facts, organizing and researching, in preparation for court. Paralegals are not allowed to represent clients, sign documents or advice clients, but otherwise may perform many of the same duties as an attorney within many other facets of law. Much of the paralegals time will be spent carrying out routine tasks such as updating company files, preparing legal contracts, reviewing documents, and giving legal assistance. The Paralegal may handle executive summaries and directives. They also may be called on to assist with company compliance issues. The role will be responsible for providing services in corporate litigation procedures and other specific business legal needs.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Preparation of legal documents and records management, secretarial support and office management

• Draft, encode or review legal documents like contracts, agreements, corporate secretary certificates, memorandums, forms, and other documents and papers as assigned

• Proofread and cite check documents, as well as review documents and exhibits in preparation of dispositions, arbitrations, and trials

• Prepare reports, correspondence, forms, affidavits, and other documents as required

• Perform records check, legal and non-legal research, typing, clerical, secretarial and administrative functions

• Researching cases and any pertinent legal information needed

• Helping lawyers prepare for court cases, including opening and closing arguments and aiding in court pleadings or motions

• Administrative duties such as taking phone calls, answering correspondence and filing

• Prepare and encode minutes of committee meeting, board meetings or board resolutions

• Provide administrative and paralegal support and assistance to lawyers and consultants

• Any other task/duty as directed by client/management


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's Degree, Post Graduate Diploma / Master's Degree in Law, Political Science, Business Studies, Legal Management or equivalent

• At least 3-5 years law/legal services experience; background in law firm or corporate law is an advantage

• Experience working with foreign law firms, including interacting with foreign lawyers is desired, preferably Australian Law Firms/Lawyers

• Must have basic knowledge of legal terminologies and principles, as well as conducting legal research, processing and facilitating of documents

• Knowledgeable in drafting pleadings, legal documentations, contracts and business correspondence

• Knowledgeable in Civil and Commercial Laws, Legal Forms and complaints requirements

• Must be able to take dictation and compose legal correspondence well

• Must possess excellent English written and oral communication skills

• Competency with Microsoft Office Suite

• Keen attention to details, resourceful, highly organized and can work with minimal supervision

• Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously with a high quality result and professionalism under tight deadlines and client expectations

• Excellent problem solving, strategic thinking and planning sills

• Must possess strong interpersonal skills and customer service focus with tact and diplomacy

• Ability to work in a creative, fast paced, team environment

• Previous relevant experience desired: Legal Assistant / Legal Editor

• Background in AU Workers Compensation Claims a definite advantage

• Experience working with Australian firms/clients preferred
