The physical education teacher has unique responsibilities in the school physical activity program to ensure that students are physically active within the physical education class.
The physical education teacher also has the responsibility to help direct and guide opportunities for physical activity within the school outside the physical education class.
1. Effectively organize space, equipment, and students.
2. Provide adequate equipment that allows all children to be active at the same time (, one ball per child).
3. Limit teacher talk or instruction time.
4. Plan practice opportunities that are structured for maximum participation (, individual, partner, and small-group activities; no elimination activities; activities that require no wait time).
5. Structure the class so that learning occurs while students are being physically active.
6. Employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media that is consistent with the physical limitations, needs, and capabilities of individuals students and/or groups of students
7. Guiding students in maintaining acceptable standards of classroom behavior
8. Maintaining records of individual student achievement and evaluating students on a continuous basis
9. Meeting and instructing assigned classes at designated times
10. Preparing for classes and maintaining written evidence of preparation
11. Upholding and enforcing school rules, school board policies, and administrative regulations
12. Working with other members of the physical education staff to plan instructional goals, objectives, and methods
