General Counsel

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer to come and join our team as General Counsel. The General Counsel is a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team, providing strategic legal advice and practical guidance to support the activities of the Council. This role leads the Legal business unit with two direct reports (Legal Counsel and Legal Secretary/Administrator) and reports to the Group Manager Corporate Services. Key responsibilities in this broad role include:
- Providing a broad range of legal advice and services to the Council
- Leading the Legal business unit
- Trusted adviser to the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team
- Lead and manage the Council’s relationships with external legal services providers
- Carry out duties of Privacy Officer
- Provide legal advice and support regarding LGOIMA including overseeing the administration of official information requests and processes
- Bachelor of Laws (minimum) with current New Zealand Law Society Practicing Certificate
- General practice experience with significant experience in the public sector and/or local government legislative operating environments preferred
- Central and/or Local Government experience preferred
- Land, property, resource management, building and/or regulatory compliance experience would also be beneficial
- Sound professional judgement
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong relationship management skills with the ability to engage with people throughout the organisation, and external advisers.
