Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. this means the successful candidate to report to the GM office full time.
The Role:
Responsible for policy development and advocacy of GM’s issues before government officials, including Egypt and other African markets. You will be part of a dynamic team advocating for GM’s business interests, implementing key strategies, strengthening critical relationships with different government entities and their staff – as well as other key partners – and working diligently and strategically on multiple issues of vital importance to GM. Manages Egypt and other African government relations by collaborating with relevant executive and legislative parts of the government and key regulatory agencies.
What You'll Do: Job Description
The Director of Government Relations is responsible for executing and communicating strategies that promote a favorable political and regulatory environment to help drive and sustain growth and is aligned to GM’s overall business strategy. Key for this position is to build and maintain the right relationships with key governmental stakeholders and influencers as well as to identify strategic forums which are important to the Company’s advocacy agenda on topics ranging from trade, auto-sector regulations, supply chain development, and sustainability.
He/she must exhibit the skills to proactively collaborate and achieve actionable results, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships with public officials, and the capability to influence policy at the highest levels. He or she should have strong public policy experience, demonstrating success on legislation and complex regulatory matters, and administrative decisions. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong track record resolving and facilitating the solution of policy and operational issues that may arise from time to time.
This role works closely to establish strong relationships with a variety of Egyptian and other African governments to advance GM’s country-level, regional, and global interests. These agencies include but are not limited to: the Ministry of Industry & Transportation, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Interior and NTRA (National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority). This role also plays a pivotal part in the leadership and advocacy engagements by the AAAM (Africa Association of Automotive Manufacturers), Egyptian Automotive Foundation (under development)
In light of the depth of GM’s manufacturing and business footprint in North America, this role is expected to work closely with foreign Governments missions to Egypt such as the US Embassy specifically with their Economic, Trade, Energy and Security sections.
As an integral part of both GM Africa and Middle East regional team and the GM Government Relations team he or she will engage with a variety of trade associations including the US Chamber of Commerce, the Global Companies (EG), and the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC) as well as other cross sectorial associations such as Egyptian Chamber of Commerce.
As part of the GM Global Regulatory Development team (GRD), this role will influence and drive for favorable outcomes on regulations being developed in the country. Review global regulations from other regions and countries to use them as reference and advocacy activities with the Government.
Work with the legislative branch of the governments in Egypt to advocate and provide positioning on any initiative affecting GM.
The position is also responsible for Africa (Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morrocco, Sub-Saharan African countries and South Africa) Government Relations and Public Policy.
On the commerce side, track, review and develop positions regarding different FTAs and accords (GAFTA, Agadir and COMESA).
