Are you a strategic thinker who can prioritise work and support others in delivering biodiversity conservation? Fixed term or secondment opportunity until 30 June 2025 – based on Stewart Island/Rakiura. Tangata whenua are inextricably linked to the whenua and te taiao, and we desire a future where whānau, hapū, and iwi can thrive in their role as rangatira and kaitiaki. This role is focused on the planning, monitoring, and reporting of our district's biodiversity work programmes. You will:

  1. Support the Operations Manager by leading the delivery, monitoring and reporting of high-priority, complex tasks.
  2. Manage the biodiversity budget and participate in planning.
  3. Scope mahi for the team to ensure the integrated delivery of top-priority outcomes for the region and facilitate monthly work schedules.
  4. Collaborate with iwi, hapū, and local partners, ensuring alignment with mana whenua, strategic objectives and local priorities.
  5. Provide technical advice on district biodiversity management.
We are looking for someone who thrives in a changing environment, with the ability to think strategically and adapt quickly to shifting priorities. If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:
  1. Experience in biodiversity or environmental management.
  2. Ability to identify risks and opportunities and prioritise when resources are constrained.
  3. High standard of written and verbal communication, with a clear and engaging communication style with strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
  4. Experience in project management, budgeting, and financial planning.
  5. Critical thinking and analysis skills, with the ability to translate strategy into workable operational plans.
  6. Strong commitment to safety and wellbeing in the workplace.
  7. Attention to detail with strong computer and data management skills.
  8. A current full New Zealand driver's licence.
  9. BSc and/or MSc in Biology/ Ecology or a related field.
  10. A current first aid certificate.
  11. Backcountry experience, working/traveling alone off-track in mountainous and forested terrain.
Mō te tīma | About the team As part of the Rakiura Operations team, you will join a tight-knit crew who genuinely enjoy working with each other and are passionate about the work they do. Accommodation on the island is limited; if required we have private staff accommodation available. We can accommodate partners, but unfortunately no pets.
