Mō to Tari o te Kaitiaki Mana Tangata – About the Ombudsman The Office of the Ombudsman plays a crucial role in supporting New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. Its core functions include addressing complaints about government agencies, conducting investigations and inspections where the Chief Ombudsman sees reason to do so, and promoting best practices in public administration. As an independent and impartial authority, the Ombudsman is committed to ensuring fairness and equity for all. Mō to tūranga – About the Team and Role The Publications and Digital team is a newly established team dedicated to delivering high-quality content and publication across various platforms including websites, intranet, reports, and corporate documents, with a focus on enhancing user engagement and accessibility, as well as the Ombudsman’s online presence, ensuring platforms and content are engaging, relevant, and fit for purpose. In this leadership role, as the Manager of Publications and Digital, you will work closely with and be supported by the Assistant Ombudsman and Manager Communications and Media in developing and implementing the digital communications strategy, plan, and work programme to support the Ombudsman’s organisational strategic aims and objectives. On a practical level, you’ll provide strategic oversight and coordination for a diverse range of initiatives, offering leadership and guidance to the team. You will be responsible for overseeing the production of high-quality publications and evaluating the effectiveness and reach of both print and digital communications. This includes ensuring that all content integrates Te Ao Māori principles and that publication processes are efficient and adhere to the highest standards. You’ll also provide professional expertise and strategic advice to the Senior Leadership Team on all aspects of digital communications. A primary focus will be establishing the digital communication function, implementing the new structure, recruiting for newly created roles, developing the team, and fostering a positive team environment and culture. He kōrero mōu – About You With an approachable, professional, and consultative style, balanced by firm confidence and decision-making abilities, you will bring deep expertise in your field and a strong understanding of relevant communications best practices and their implications. You’ll also demonstrate superior problem-solving skills, a commitment to service delivery excellence, and the ability to articulate your ideas clearly and persuasively, instilling confidence and influencing stakeholders at all levels. To be successful in this role, you’ll have:
  • Significant experience in a communications role at a senior/strategic level, including experience in planning, managing, and leading service delivery, preferably within the NZ public sector
  • Proven leadership capabilities with prior staff management experience
  • Proficient in advising and coaching teams and senior leaders on a range of digital communications, marketing, engagement, campaigning, brand management, media, and publications matters
  • Well-developed knowledge of digital communication strategies and best practices
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong relationship management capabilities and ability to work across the organisation
  • An understanding of the Ombudsman’s role and its impact on society
  • A relevant tertiary level qualification
All applicants will have a legal entitlement to work in New Zealand. The appointee will be subject to a criminal convictions check and may be required to achieve and maintain a New Zealand Government (NZSIS) security clearance. Depending on your skills and experience, the starting salary for this position is expected to be between $127,676 to $159,595.
