Position Overview: We have an exciting new opportunity for a Lead Engineer - Embedded Design to join our growing team. Reporting directly to Equinox Power’s Chief Technology Officer, we are looking for a proactive leader who enjoys working in a small start-up environment and wants to have a meaningful impact towards our company’s strategic goals, project deliverables and the growth and skillsets of other engineers. You must be a self-starter, critical thinker, solution-oriented, and enjoy and feel comfortable with not knowing what the day will bring! Equinox Power has a collaborative team culture and we need someone with a similar mindset and work style to further contribute to our company’s success. This is a full-time in-person role for our office in Burnaby, BC. Due to our company’s expected growth and workload, we anticipate the Lead Engineer - Embedded Design to transition to a Team Lead position in future, so we will need someone to apply their technical expertise as well as lead and mentor others. In this role, you will need a strong background in embedded systems, firmware development, and power electronics. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing and implementing complex embedded solutions, working with microcontrollers, and supporting software and firmware for power electronic systems. This role requires a senior-level professional with at least 6 years of practical experience. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and develop advanced embedded systems for power electronic applications, including schematic design, PCB layout, and firmware development.
- Develop and maintain robust C firmware libraries, including data structures, interrupt routines, and error handling for safety-critical applications.
- Work with ARM Cortex microcontrollers and implement communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, CAN, RS485, and USB.
- Conduct thorough prototype testing and validation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and certifications.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate embedded solutions into larger systems and support product development.
- Utilize simulation tools and lab equipment to debug and optimize hardware and firmware.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical leadership and knowledge sharing.
- Drive innovation within the team by researching and implementing cutting-edge technologies and methodologies in embedded systems and power electronics.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (Master’s Degree or Ph.D. is a strong plus).
- At least 6 years of experience in embedded systems design and firmware development.
- Proficiency in C programming and experience with development environments such as STM32CubeIDE and Visual Studio Code.
- Extensive hands-on experience with schematic design, PCB layout, and high-speed signal design.
- In-depth knowledge of power electronics, including switch-mode power supplies and analog signal conditioning.
- Experience with communication protocols and debugging tools (e.G., SWD, JTAG, logic analyzers).
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.G., GitHub) and agile development practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Some work experience in power conversion projects (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) at various power levels ranging from 500W to 30kW is a plus.
- Familiarity with real-time control and feedback loop stability and analysis.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as PSIM, PLECS, LTSpice, MATLAB, and Simulink.
- Background in developing embedded systems for commercial or industrial applications.
