Legal Counsel

HEB Construction is a dynamic and innovative leader in New Zealand infrastructure. Our work includes the construction and maintenance of roads of all sizes, rail projects, bridges, ports and marine work, water and wastewater infrastructure, land and urban development, as well as precast and heavy haulage contracts. We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Legal Counsel to join our legal team based in Tāmaki Makaurau |Auckland. Our ideal candidate comes with a minimum of 5 years' PQE, a high level of commercial awareness, experience in construction law and New Zealand civil construction contracts, and the ability to provide pragmatic, solutions-focused legal advice. We need a proactive individual who has exceptional interpersonal skills, strong problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities, and the ability to communicate effectively across a range of audiences. Reporting to our General Counsel, your duties will include:

• Providing high-level legal and commercial analysis to HEB's Executive and Senior Management Team
• Reviewing large construction contracts prior to submission
• Carrying out negotiations with customers and other partners on tender opportunities and live projects
• Providing practical and accurate legal advice project disputes and formulation of commercial/legal strategies prior to commencement of formal resolution processes
• Developing improvements to systems and processes to proactively identify and manage risk
• Staying up-to-date and well-informed of new or proposed changes to relevant legislation and policy
• Working to drive 'best practice' in the delivery of legal services
• Working in an approachable and flexible way with the business to advise on other broader legal issues that arise in the context of business operations such as health and safety, property law, intellectual property, privacy, environment, competition law, employment, insolvency and governance.
