We are seeking an experienced Environmental Manager with expertise in environmental compliance, permitting, and environmental assessments, who can also contribute to health and safety initiatives. This important role will:

Develop and enhance the environmental management system tailored to the Nature Reserve
Conduct environmental reviews for land-use permits and development applications to ensure alignment with nature conservation goals
Implement and manage the health and safety system to safeguard staff, rangers, contractors, and all operations
Collaborate closely with the compliance team to integrate their activities into centralized systems effectively

Together, these responsibilities will form a comprehensive Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) framework, uniquely designed to address the challenges of managing a Nature Reserve that spans both terrestrial and marine environments. This role is essential to the successful activation and long-term management of the client's Nature Reserve.

Key Activities

Environmental Management and Health & Safety

Develop and refine the environmental management system for the Nature Reserve, ensuring it meets the unique requirements of terrestrial and marine environments
Conduct thorough environmental reviews of land-use permits and development applications, ensuring alignment with conservation priorities
Implement and oversee a health and safety system that safeguards staff, rangers, contractors, and all operational activities
Collaborate with the compliance team to ensure their activities are effectively integrated into centralized systems, fostering streamlined operations
Monitor and enforce compliance with environmental and health and safety regulations, promoting a culture of stewardship and responsibility
Perform regular risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for activities across the reserve
Provide training and capacity-building opportunities for staff, rangers, and contractors to ensure compliance and foster a strong safety culture
Conduct audits of the HSSE system to ensure it remains effective, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions
Respond to incidents by investigating root causes and implementing preventative measures

Environmental Permitting and Assessments

Support and lead environmental impact assessments for Nature Reserve projects, such as trails, campsites, and conservation infrastructure
Evaluate and manage permit applications for commercial and research activities, ensuring compliance with conservation and operational standards
Review research proposals to ensure alignment with the Nature Reserve's goals and priorities
Liaise with operational teams to implement best practices in sustainable tourism, visitor management, and resource use
Coordinate with relevant authorities to acquire required permits, including MOMRAH and municipal approvals
Track and manage the Land Use Permit (LUP) process, engaging with stakeholders and maintaining accurate records

Requirements

The Environmental Manager should have a strong track record of developing and managing integrated health, safety, security and environmental (HSE) systems, conducting environmental assessments, and supporting permitting processes in large-scale, complex, or environmentally sensitive operations. Experience in projects spanning terrestrial and marine environments is highly desirable. The role will require:

At least 10 years of progressive experience in HSSE management, with a focus on both land and marine operations. If all areas of HSSE are not covered in your experience, then strong experience in more than one area of HSSE is required at a minimum.
As a minimum, a bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, sustainability, environmental management, environmental engineering, or similar.
A master's degree is preferred
Ideally a professional certification in HSSE management (e.g., NEBOSH, CSP, CIH, or equivalent)
In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, international standards, and best practices
Experience in managing HSSE management systems in environmentally sensitive or conservation-focused operations is highly desirable
Innovative Thinking: Ability to think creatively and innovate
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with Arabic proficiency as a bonus
Proficiency in MS Office productivity platforms and a high level of digital literacy is preferred
