- Select and specify cooling equipment, components, and materials, considering energy efficiency, scalability, and system integration.
- Perform detailed thermal load analysis to assess heat generation and distribution within the data center, recommending cooling strategies that meet capacity and redundancy requirements.
- Utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and other tools to model airflow and cooling efficiency, identifying potential areas for system optimization.
- Analyse and optimize airflow, chiller plant designs, and cooling tower systems to ensure that cooling systems are as energy efficient as possible.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, architects, mechanical engineers, and contractors, to integrate cooling solutions with other building and data center systems.
- Coordinate with project managers to ensure that cooling designs are aligned with project timelines, budget, and scope.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure the selection of best-in-class cooling technologies that meet both performance and cost requirements.
- Lead the technical aspects of cooling design throughout the project lifecycle, from concept through to installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineers, ensuring high-quality standards are met and maintained throughout the design and implementation phases.
- Review and approve detailed design drawings, specifications, and commissioning documents related to cooling systems.
- Design and implement sustainable and energy-efficient cooling systems, with a focus on minimizing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of data center operations.
- Lead initiatives to integrate renewable energy solutions, waste heat recovery, or free cooling systems (e.g., using ambient air) into the data center cooling design.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of energy management strategies to reduce operational costs and improve environmental sustainability.
- Oversee the commissioning of cooling systems to ensure they operate as designed and meet all performance and efficiency targets.
- Perform post-installation audits and troubleshooting, resolving any cooling system issues that may arise.
- Monitor system performance and provide recommendations for further optimization or maintenance as needed.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation for all cooling system designs, specifications, and performance reports.
- Ensure that design documentation complies with regulatory standards and is kept up to date for future audits or operational reviews.
- Provide regular progress reports and technical updates to stakeholders, including senior management and clients.
- Identify and assess potential risks in the cooling design and propose strategies to mitigate them.
- Provide expert advice and solutions during the design, construction, and operational phases to prevent system failures or inefficiencies.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Building Services, Energy Systems, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the design and engineering of cooling systems for large-scale, hyperscale data centers or mission-critical facilities.
- Extensive experience with a wide range of cooling technologies, including air-cooled and liquid-cooled systems, chillers, CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units, and precision cooling systems.
- Proven track record of designing energy-efficient and cost-effective cooling solutions for hyperscale data centers.
