The Practical Nurse provides appropriate patient care according to established care plans under the supervision from Registered Nurses in accordance with the Nursing Scope of Practice. Adheres to and promotes the professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi. The Practical Nurse is not licensed for independent practice and remains responsible and accountable for his/her own actions. Understands, supports, and promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Key Responsibilities of a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Emergency Department
- Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
- Clinical Care and Treatment
- Provide basic wound care, including cleaning, dressing, and monitoring for signs of infection.
- Assist in performing diagnostic tests – POCT, ECG, and phlebotomy.
- Perform POCT quality control checks.
- Monitor patients for changes in condition and report observations to the healthcare team promptly.
- Patient Support and Education
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families during their stay in the emergency department.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with registered nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping
- Accurately document all aspects of patient care.
- Help the registered nurse in getting patients ready for discharge.
- Emergency Response
- Assist in emergency procedures, such as BLS.
- Help prepare and maintain equipment and supplies for emergency procedures.
- Infection Control and Safety
- Adhere to infection control protocols and safety guidelines to prevent the spread of infection.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
- Supplies and Consumables
- Ensure that the clinical areas are stocked with supplies and consumables.
- Continuous Learning and Professional Development
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices and advancements in emergency care.
- Attend department meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives as required.
- Escort home discharge patients by ambulance.
- Daily and monthly checking (including E-Carts, Broselow carts, Ambulance Medication box, etc.).
- Escort admitted patients along with the Registered Nurse.
- Escort stable patients to the specialty clinics and Radiology department.
- Store, manage, and dispense CSSD items.
