For more information, visit Responsibilities: This position primarily reports into the Emergency Department, but as required, supports timely access to Nina’s Place by prioritizing patients seeking care related to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Metrics confirm that our Emergency Department is one of the top performing hospitals in the province. The Emergency Department is a 42-bed unit that serves the community of Burlington and the surrounding area. Last year, we had approximately 45,000 visits and our volumes continue to grow. Our Emergency Department serves patients of all ages and treats patients of every medical and mental health illness. Our dedicated multi-disciplinary team collaborates to provide safe, high quality care to our patient population. This ambitious team delivers care reflecting our values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence. Nina’s Place is accessed through the Emergency Department 24 hours a day to provide support, medical care, and forensic evidence collection to individuals of all ages who have experienced a sexual assault or domestic violence. Upon the arrival of a Nina’s Place patient, this role assumes primary nursing responsibility for their care. Registered Nurses in Nina’s Place are dedicated and specially trained in providing crisis intervention, information, forensic documentation (which may include photography), and comprehensive care including medical and psychological support to individuals who have recently experienced sexual or domestic violence. The Nina’s Place RN will complete follow-up with clients during the evening hours, may be required to participate in outreach within the community and assist with the daily operations. Qualifications: Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse. Must have current or recent clinical experience of at least two (2) years in the Emergency, I.C.U. or step down units. Preference will be given to candidates with current Emergency nursing experience and in a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence program providing care to survivors of SA/DV. Current Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) designation is an asset. Current BCLS certification, ACLS and PALS preferred. Coronary Care Nursing 1; must be obtained within 1 year of start date. Demonstrated the ability to competently assess the patient, intervene appropriately. Demonstrated ability to function effectively in emergency situations. Demonstrated clinical assessment and patient/family teaching skills. Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated effective documentation skills. Demonstrate the knowledge, experience and ability to provide care for patients with a variety of needs including but not limited to: initiation and maintenance of IV's, venipuncture, administration of medication delivered via various routes, blood and blood product administration, patient controlled analgesia, capillary blood glucose monitoring, NG tubes, chest tubes, enteral feeds, wound management, oxygen therapy. Ability to work in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision. Experience and skill in adult venipuncture. Current training and/or experience in general physical assessment skills and the ability to assess mental health status. Experience and/or demonstrated ability in providing emotional/psychosocial trauma support and non-judgmental supportive care to survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Experience and/or demonstrated ability to provide crisis counselling. Knowledge, sensitivity and experience in dealing with issues of diversity. Knowledge of women’s health. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, expertise and commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork, community liaison skills and the ability to work as an independent practitioner. PLEASE NOTE: As indicated, this assignment is subject to change based on the needs of the Emergency Department and Nina’s Place. This position primarily will support the operational requirements of the Emergency, but as required, the successful applicant will prioritize the patient care for Nina’s Place patients.
