Title: Post-Doctoral Researcher PD2 (Refractive Optics) Department: CAPPA Contract Type: 24 Month Fixed Term Contract Location: Bishopstown Campus, Cork Reporting to: Dr Liam Lewis Overview of the Department of CAPPA: The Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA) is a research centre working in the fields of applied optics and photonics and is based at Munster Technological University. The centre has an active and varied research portfolio and industrial partners in various sectors including medical devices, electronics, food technology, pharmaceuticals and photonics. CAPPA is currently seeking to recruit a researcher(s) to work within the centre on challenging and exciting new projects. The successful candidate(s) will join CAPPA, in the area of optical design for novel imaging systems development. The research will concern the development and application of novel optical imaging- based platforms based on refractive, diffractive, hybrid and metasurfaces. Duties of the Post: The position is funded through the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund grant. The position provides an opportunity to join a team of researchers supporting various applied and basic photonic research programs. The successful candidate(s) will carry out research into the deployment of photonic technologies combining both fundamental science and industry-driven research. The position will focus on the development of refractive optics for imaging and monitoring applications to drive innovative solutions in compact and high-performance optical systems and optimizing refractive imaging solutions and contrast these against advanced diffractive, meta and hybrid elements to achieve superior imaging quality, compactness, and cost-efficiency. There will be opportunities to leverage existing projects and research facilities in CAPPA to identify new research opportunities and industrial projects. Key Responsibilities: Research and development Conduct individual and/or collaborative research to the highest ethical standards in a variety of settings Design, simulate, and optimize optical systems using software such as Zemax Optic Studio or equivalent December 2024 Page 2 of 5 Ref: 023015 Develop imaging optics solutions for various applications, balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability Source and test off-the -shelf imaging solutions Perform CAD design for optical systems and components to ensure precision in manufacturing and assembly Conduct performance analysis and testing of optical prototypes, refining designs based on experimental results Support prototyping and validation efforts, including hands-on work in labs and coordination with manufacturing partners Carry out any administrative work associated with your programme of research. Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged in for the relevant research stakeholders in the appropriate form. Personal Development Engage in appropriate professional training and development opportunities to develop own transferable skills, career and reputation. Qualification Requirements and Selection Criteria for role: Essential: The post(s) will require a researcher who holds a PhD in a relevant field such as physics, electrical engineering, photonics or optics and at least 8 years of relevant post-graduate research or industrial experience .
