The Labour Leader’s Office is seeking a Press Secretary to join our dedicated team. Mō te tūnga | About the role: The Labour Leader’s Office (LLO) is seeking a dedicated professional to support the Parliamentary Labour Party Leader and members of Parliament (MPs) in their parliamentary duties. This is an exciting position for someone who will be passionate about providing high quality and timely information, advice and practical support in relation to the media. As a press secretary, you will deliver advice relating to media and public relations issues, including campaigns and MP profiles. You will assist with media interviews and prepare material including press releases, media messages, columns, social media, and speeches. You will identify media opportunities and risks. Tō kete | What you will bring to the role: A background in journalism is preferred. The core technical skills that you’ll bring to this position are a deep practical understanding and appreciation of the importance of media and the role it plays in society and within a broad communications strategy. You will help make informed decisions, have an ability to analyse and collate complex information, and be an excellent problem solver. You will need the ability to prioritise workloads and deliver on (sometimes) conflicting deadlines. Above all else, you will have strong interpersonal skills and work well within a team in a fast-paced working environment. Ngā haepapa | Responsibilities:

  • Develop specialist knowledge and expertise in specific portfolio(s) and areas of interest, to provide media advice and support to the Labour Leader and MPs.
  • Lead the collection, preparation, and development of media and communications materials, including press releases, speech notes, media briefings, op-eds, and social media.
  • Have a strong understanding of political risk and opportunity.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be willing to travel to support the Leader and MPs with visits, events, meetings, and outreach activities.
The starting salary range for this role is $90,000 per annum. Appointments will be based on skills and experience (please note, the full salary range extends beyond this to allow for tenure progression). He aha te pai o te mahi ki Te Ratonga Whare Pāremata? | Why work for Parliamentary Service?
