Legal Counsel Department: Operations Employment Type: Full Time Location: Sydney Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000 / year Description We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical legal professional to join our team as our first Legal Counsel. This role involves assisting with the review, drafting, and negotiating customer contracts, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and supporting collections efforts. Additionally, it includes establishing and managing legal structures in new jurisdictions as the company expands. This is a new role for us and will play an important part in how we manage our existing and future contract negotiations and obligations. It would be well suited to someone looking to move out of a law firm into a fast-growing startup, or someone doing a similar role in-house and looking for a new challenge. The role Your day to day here will look something like this: Customer Contract Management:
- Review, analyze, and draft customer contracts
- Identify and address potential legal risks and liabilities within contracts
- Negotiate contract terms with customers as needed
- Maintain a centralized contract repository and ensure accurate contract tracking
- Ensure that the company is in compliance with different customer requirements
- Conduct regular compliance audits and assessments
- Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures
- Provide guidance and training to employees on compliance matters
- Manage relationships with external compliance consultants or auditors
- Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards
- Assist with collections efforts
- Review and analyze collection-related documents
- Identify potential actions to recover outstanding debts
- Research and analyze legal requirements for establishing business operations in new jurisdictions
- Coordinate with external legal counsel to establish necessary legal entities and structures
- Manage ongoing legal and compliance matters in foreign markets
- Juris Doctorate (JD) or equivalent legal degree
- Experience in contract review, drafting, and negotiation
- Experience in compliance and risk management
- Experience with employment law is an advantage
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
