DescriptionCarnegie Mellon University Qatar invites applications for a full-time (9-month with opportunity for additional summer support) position asAssistant Teaching Professor of Englishat our Qatar campus beginning in Fall 2025.

Teaching load is 2/2 with a focus on courses within the First-year Writing (FYW) Program. We are especially interested in candidates with: a record of excellence in undergraduate education, including course planning and curricular development in FYW; research interests in FYW; and an ability to connect their teaching and research. Our program strongly encourages collaboration between faculty teaching similar courses.

APPOINTMENT AND RANK

Assistant Teaching Professor is a nontenure-track faculty career position with provision for renewal and promotion to Associate Teaching and Full Teaching Professor. Full Teaching Professors must fulfill two criteria: (1) to be outstanding educators within Carnegie Mellon, for example, through excellence in classroom teaching, curricular development, program leadership, and student advising and mentoring; and (2) to be nationally or internationally known for contributions to education or to research. Assistant and Associate Teaching faculty must demonstrate that they will, in due course, fulfill these criteria.

ABOUT CMUQ

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar is a branch campus of Carnegie Mellon University that operates in concert with other U.S. and European branch campuses under the umbrella of the Qatar Foundation's Education City. The branch campus closely follows the admissions requirements and English-medium curriculum of the home campus. CMUQ has served a diverse student body since 2004. Current enrollment is approximately 450 students representing around 40 countries, and the several thousand students in Education City are a broad mix of nationalities, with many from the Middle East, North Africa, and Central and South Asia. The majority of CMUQ faculty are on teaching tracks and are hired specifically to teach at this campus; others include visiting faculty from the main campus as well as locally-hired visitors. CMUQ's primary focus is undergraduate education in Business Administration, Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Information Systems.

QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements include a PhD in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, Second Language Writing, Second Language Studies, or a related field at the time of appointment. Knowledge and experience related to teaching writing for multilingual students is required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong candidates should demonstrate a passion for teaching FYW and a research agenda that could help develop and enrich the FYW curriculum at CMUQ. For example, a relevant research agenda could include corpus-based pedagogy and AI applications to writing.

A cover letter that highlights the applicant's proven track record of teaching excellence, or potential for teaching, as well as their fit with the position.

A teaching statement outlining the candidate's teaching philosophy and experience, including the use of any innovative approaches for teaching students, and any relevant courses.

A research statement (clearly indicating the candidate's approach to involving undergraduate students in research or opportunities for involving them).

Diversity statement that outlines how the candidate has contributed to or plans to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The statement may include past examples of, or future plans to help, the learning and growth of students from diverse backgrounds. These examples or plans can be in the form of activities/initiatives conducted/planned both in-class and outside the class.

Evidence of effective teaching: sample course syllabi and course evaluations.

A writing sample.
