The opportunity
ASIO offers careers where ordinary Australians can do extraordinary things. This is an opportunity for capable and dedicated psychologists to develop their career within a dynamic and supportive environment. We have psychologist positions available across levels AE5 (APS5 equivalent) through AEE2 (EL2 equivalent) and will establish merit pools to fill future vacancies as they become available.
Role responsibilities
Psychologists deliver a range of psychological services within ASIO. Irrespective of your level, some domestic travel may be required. Normally, you will commence in one of the following roles:
Employee support (counselling, assessment, psychoeducation, brief interventions)
Security vetting (assessments for suitability to hold a high-level security clearance)
Recruitment and selection (refine and deliver psychological components of selection)
Internal security support (clearance reviews, trainee support, internal selection and allocation)
Your role at the AE5 (APS5 equivalent) and AE6 (APS6 equivalent) levels may include:
Performing a range of psychological assessments
Providing psychological advice to the organisation in support of recruitment and management
Providing counselling and brief interventions to staff
Supporting the development and delivery of training
Building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Providing other services and specialist input to the organisation on psychological issues
Undertaking research and project work
Your role at the AEE1 (EL1 equivalent) and AEE2 (EL2 Equivalent) level may include these additional tasks:
Identifying and forecasting organisational trends and recommending psychological responses
Implementing and supporting policy change
Providing advice on the management of individuals in support of security requirements
Overseeing the delivery of psychological advice and support
Driving the development and delivery of training programs
Promoting psychology with stakeholders in support of business outcomes
Proposing/designing behavioural science research and projects
Essential Qualifications
All candidates must hold:
General registration (unconditional) with the Psychology Board of Australia
A master's degree or equivalent in Clinical, Forensic or Organisational Psychology
In addition, the following levels must have:
AE6 (APS6 equivalent): at least 2 years of post-registration experience
AEE1 (EL1 equivalent): at least 5 years of post-registration experience
AEE2 (EL2 equivalent): at least 8 years of post-registration experience

Key attributes

Training and experience in clinical or organisational assessment and intervention
Ability to provide psychological opinion and advice to support organisation decision-making
Knowledge, skills, and experience in effectively managing staff
Strong ethical boundaries and well-developed problem-solving skills
Interpersonal competence and effective communication skills - both verbal and written
Demonstrated ability to work well in teams
Eligibility
To be eligible for the role, you must be:
an Australian citizen
assessed as suitable to hold and maintain a Top Secret security clearance at the highest level
Location
Canberra is the preferred location for these positions with limited opportunities in Melbourne and Sydney, which are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please indicate in your application if you have a preferred work location, and where relevant, if you are prepared to relocate to Canberra. ASIO provides financial relocation support for interstate movement.

Employment conditions
Employment is under the ASIO Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for the continuation of superannuation under Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
