As a Legal Counsel at SurePay, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our operations remain legally compliant and aligned with the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape of the fintech sector. You will work closely with our legal team to provide expert guidance on legal matters, draft and negotiate contracts, and support all legal aspects that affect our business and growing global presence.

Our SurePay IBAN-Name Check is already trusted by several countries and over 100 banks to significantly reduce payment fraud, and we're set to expand even further. In this role, you'll tackle a range of complex, high-impact projects, enhancing both your expertise and career in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
What you'll do
Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant laws, financial technology regulations, payment regulations, privacy and data protection laws and industry standards across multiple jurisdictions, particularly in relation to our Account Check product.
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts including partnership agreements, service agreements (MSA), NDAs and other key legal documents.
Stay informed of changes in fintech regulations and advise the business on implications and necessary actions, ensuring we are proactive in our compliance efforts as we grow our presence globally.
Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with new and existing business initiatives, including cross-border activities and product expansions.
Support the company's governance processes, ensuring adherence to corporate policies and procedures.
Provide legal support for the company's international growth strategy, including navigating local legal requirements and cross-border regulatory challenges.
Collaborating with external legal advisors on specialised matters and represent the company in negotiations, litigation, or other legal proceedings.
Work closely with other departments, including product development, compliance, and sales, to provide legal advice that supports business objectives while protecting the company's interests.
How you'll succeed
3 - 5 years of relevant experience, with a focus on fintech, banking, payments, or technology sectors. Experience within a law firm or in-house at a fintech or financial institution is highly desirable.
An LLB or LLM degree in Law (e.g. Business Law or Comparative Law).
Strong understanding of (fintech) regulations, including PSD2, GDPR, IPR and other relevant legal frameworks. Experience with cross-border regulations is a plus.
Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex contracts, particularly within the SaaS/fintech industry.
Familiarity with technology and data privacy laws, particularly as they apply to fintech products and services.
Excellent research and analytical skills to effectively navigate complex legal issues.
A commercial mindset and the ability to provide pragmatic, solutions-oriented and risk-based advice.
High degree of independence, initiative, and decisiveness, including the ability to work collaboratively and contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
Strong organisational skills and can-do mentality.
The ability to thrive in a dynamic and rapidly growing business environment.
Fluency in English, fluency in Dutch is an advantage.
