Chartered in 1983, it is a private, autonomous, and self-governing international university with 13 teaching sites in 6 countries distributed across three continents. As an international institution, AKU operates on the core principles of quality, relevance, impact, and access; and AKU is a model of academic excellence and an agent of social change.ResponsibilitiesReporting to the General Counsel, you will be responsible for advising on legal matters affecting the operations of the University and its affiliated entities as well as providing leadership, innovative and practical support to diverse operational requirements. You will also be responsible for the preparing and finalizing of key legal documents and ensuring statutory compliance. Your mandate will include safeguarding the Institution's reputation by ensuring that the Institution complies with law.You will be responsible for: Reporting to the General Counsel, you will be responsible for advising on legal matters affecting the operations of the University and its affiliated entities as well as providing leadership, innovative and practical support to diverse operational requirements. You will also be responsible for the preparing and finalizing of key legal documents and ensuring statutory compliance. Your mandate will include safeguarding the Institution's reputation by ensuring that the Institution complies with law.You will be responsible for: ensure hospital and university operations comply with all applicable laws and regulationsproviding advice to the Senior Leadership teamassisting in the compliance with statutory requirements on registration, licensing, insurance and maintaining appropriate registersreviewing and finalizing key legal documents including leases, contracts, licenses, for the Institution's operations and related agreements/correspondenceensure contractual agreements are in compliance with legal requirements and hospital policiesapplying effective risk management techniques and offering proactive advice on possible legal issuessupervising and handling litigation related to the Institution including receipt of court summons, orders or other process and liaising with external legal firms as requiredapplying effective risk management techniques and offering proactive advice on possible legal issuesmonitoring legislation development and providing legislation analysisrepresent the hospital in legal proceedings when necessary and providing clarification on legal language or specificationsdevelop and update hospital policies in accordance with legal requirementsproviding advice to the Registrar and/or relevant personnel on the application of the student disciplinary code of conduct and related policiesconducting research and evaluating different risk factors regarding business decisions and operationsproviding legal advice and responding to queries on a diverse range of issues affecting the Institution including on institutional policies and proceduresreviewing, augmenting and/or improving data bases and systems supporting thesework with external stakeholders, such as regulatory bodies and legal professionals. Requirements You should have/be: bachelor's degree in Law or in relevant filed from an accredited law school an enrolled advocate with a current/valid practicing certificate proven experience as a legal counsel in business or institutional environment with managerial responsibilities. A minimum of three - Five years experience with demonstrable capacity in commercial/corporate law, labor law, construction law, intellectual property law, loan financing and litigation practice excellent interpersonal, customer service and negotiation skills highly developed leadership and communication skills and demonstrable capability in relationship building at all levels high degree of professional ethics and integrity ability to act quickly to address a crisis drawing on appropriate resources ability to adapt to new ideas and initiatives across a wide variety of issues or situations capability to effectively operate, and manage resources in a fast paced and dynamic environment strong self-management with a high level of energy and flexibility.
