The Opportunity: This position will direct the Animal Health team and focus on effective operational management within the department. They will implement department goals and ensure the integration of activities with the overall organizational strategic plan, operating plans, mandate, mission, vision and values of Assiniboine Park Conservancy. This position will also implement and maintain standards aligned with accredited zoological practices for all aspects of veterinary, animal nutrition, and integrated pest management programs. The successful incumbent will also set achievable growth goals and targets for the department along with being accountable for the overall well-being of a population of approximately 200 species and 1,500 specimens. Your Role: Plan and oversee the implementation of preventative health programs for all animals under the care of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, including but not limited to examinations, clinical pathology, parasitology, hoof, nail and beak trims. Establish quarantine policies and procedures and ensure their implementation for animals entering the APC population. Establish diets for quarantined animals, determine test requirements for incoming animals, examine and perform diagnostic tests on quarantined animals as necessary, communicate with federal and state / provincial agencies regarding health requirements and documentation necessary for export and transport of collection animals, establish transportation standards and expectations to safeguard animal wellbeing during transportation. Medical and surgical case management. Plan and implement or supervise the physical or chemical restraint of animals undergoing treatment in a manner safe for staff and the animal population while ensuring adequate restraint and analgesia. Create diagnostic and treatment plans reflective of best practices in the profession, consult and collaborate with specialists as dictated by clinical need. Perform physical examinations and other diagnostic testing as appropriate, conduct or supervise the collection of clinical samples. Administer medical and surgical treatments to population animals, in keeping with zoological and veterinary standards. Maintain inventory of hospital supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals to support diagnostic and therapeutic plans on a wide variety of veterinary patients. Ensure pharmaceuticals are inventoried, tracked and stored in compliance with relevant legislation and best practices. Communicate effectively with staff and where relevant, management, members of the public or the media during process to ensure accurate collection of relevant medical details and to relate veterinary aspects to concerned parties. Perform clinical pathological and gross pathological examination on Zoo animals. Monitor pathological trends and use data to adjust medical, surgical and preventative protocols as necessary. Maintain accurate animal medical, surgical and pathology records in compliance with provincial, federal and zoological standards of excellence. Monitor nutrition status of zoo animals. Maintain up to date component analyses of all diets fed in the Zoo. Review and revise diets offered to zoo animals in consultation with Animal Care staff, curators, veterinarians and outside nutritionists as appropriate. Oversee all aspects of animal food handling and preparation at Assiniboine Park. Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and best practices in all areas of animal food storage, handling and provision. Coordinate aspects of behavioural enrichment through diet in cooperation with Animal Care staff, curators and animal nutrition staff. Mentor graduate veterinary interns and externship students in the field of Zoological Veterinary Medicine.
