Treasury Solicitor - Tumuwhakarae a Ture at The Treasury, Wellington

We have a rare opportunity for an ambitious and highly experienced lawyer to join us as our Treasury Solicitor (Chief Legal Advisor) - Tumuwhakarae a Ture. This is a key leadership role and is responsible for leading Treasury's legal function (Te Puna Rōia), to ensure the availability of in-house and external legal resources to support the Treasury's business needs, delivery of Treasury's strategic priorities and compliance with our legal obligations. In this role you will:
  • Be responsible for high quality legal advice that supports the decision making of Ministers, the Secretary to the Treasury, Treasury's ELT and Senior Management;
  • Lead the protection of privacy by the Treasury as Privacy Officer;
  • Supporting the effective management of legal risk;
  • Positively encourage professional and personal development of the team that drives high performance and builds capability;
  • Manage the finances of the team for maximum effect within budget allocations, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer;
  • Support overall governance and accountability frameworks at the Treasury;
  • Collaborate with other leaders in the Corporate and Shared Services directorate to support and enable us to achieve our vision;
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with external and internal stakeholders including the central agencies, Crown Law, Parliamentary Counsel Office and other government lawyers;
  • Actively participate in the Government Legal network. This role will also involve collaborating with Chief Legal Advisors of the central agencies to support efficient and consistent approaches to legal services and governance.

The specific experience, skills and qualities that will help you succeed in this role include:
  • Qualified to practise law in New Zealand and a current practising certificate (or eligibility to hold a practising certificate);
  • Excellent people leadership skills.
  • Senior legal leadership experience, ideally in a public sector organisation;
  • An excellent understanding and experience of in-house legal practice and functions, management, and strategy development;
  • Proven skills in influencing senior decision makers;
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills;
  • The ability to operate in a fast-paced, changeable and complex environment;
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills;Commitment to building and valuing mātauranga Māori and ability to advise on Treaty/Tiriti legal obligations and opportunities.
