Join Our Team: Fire Safety Manager - Ensuring Safety and Compliance at UC Are you passionate about fire safety and risk management? Do you have the expertise to ensure compliance with fire safety legislation and provide strategic guidance to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors? If so, we want you to lead our fire safety initiatives at the University of Canterbury as our Fire Safety Manager. Āu Mahi | What You Will Do As the Fire Safety Manager, you will be at the heart of UC's fire safety strategy, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and offering expert advice to senior leadership and staff. Your responsibilities will span fire risk assessments, safety audits, and policy development to ensure a fire-safe environment across UC's campus. You'll work closely with the Facilities Management team, external partners, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) to provide the best solutions, guidance, and training for fire safety across UC. In this leadership role, you will also have the opportunity to influence key decisions during the development of new buildings and campus refurbishments. Key Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Leadership : Provide expert guidance on fire safety policies and ensure their effective implementation across all sites.
  • Fire Risk Management : Oversee regular fire risk assessments, audits, and investigations of fire-related incidents to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration : Build strong working relationships with UC staff, external consultants, and emergency services to maintain a fire-safe environment.
  • Training and Development : Design, deliver, and monitor fire safety training to ensure all staff are well-prepared and informed.
  • Compliance Monitoring : Ensure all UC properties comply with local legislation and industry standards, with ongoing monitoring and reporting to management.
Minimum Requirements:
  • A degree in Fire Safety Engineering or related field (CPEng or NZ Diploma in Fire Engineering preferred).
  • At least 10 years of experience in fire safety management, ideally in large, complex estates or campuses.
  • Deep understanding of fire safety regulations, fire risk assessments, and related technical advice.
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and effectively.
