Bring your strategic communications expertise to deliver campaigns and reports that will shape European narratives to speed the shift to a clean, electrified economy worldwide. Ember is recruiting a Communications Officer (Europe) with exceptional strategic communications skills, great attention to detail and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment, to push our communications work to the next level. We already have a great reputation for providing clear and captivating data-driven content and communications materials that have helped shape the narrative around the electricity transition, empower campaigners and/or resulted in both direct and indirect policy change. Your work will have a real impact in moving the world towards a zero-carbon electricity system, in a fast growing and innovative organisation. You will support and contribute to the Ember communications team, partnering with policy teams in Europe to help our analysts create compelling data-driven content and communications materials. You will work on Ember’s flagship reports, including the European Electricity Review, and will develop campaigns around electrification and coal mine methane. You will deliver work that shapes EU-wide policy and also national, particularly focused on Türkiye, Poland and Czechia. The role will report to the Communications Manager (Europe). Please note: Interviews for this role are scheduled as follows: First stage - 25th to 27th February; Second stage - 4th, 5th, and 6th March. Key responsibilities:
- Develop communications strategies for your target regions that influence policymakers with compelling messages through the channels they trust
- Create and deliver a strategic communications plan for each publication to achieve Ember’s policy and narrative objectives
- Design and deliver long-term campaigns to influence policy and help implement communications strategies at national, regional and global level
- Lead press activities, including developing press materials, writing opinion articles, building relationships with journalists and pitching stories
- Provide editorial support to policy teams to improve the quality and clarity of Ember’s analyses and ensure that all final Ember outputs are clear, visually engaging, proofread and in line with the organisation’s voice and style guidelines
- Provide training and support to develop Ember’s media spokespeople
- Foster our network in Europe and maintain a database of contacts, including press and key amplifier stakeholders
- Research new outreach opportunities for Ember such as podcasts, events, awards
- Engage with the digital communications team to define the strategic goals and review content for our digital platforms, including social media, website and data visualisation
- Collect and analyse evaluation metrics using Meltwater and other media evaluation tools
- A passion for tackling climate change and accelerating the energy transition
- Minimum 2 years working as a communications professional
- Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
- A track record of creating/using content for a range of audiences and formats (e.g. website, social media, emails, press releases)
- Confidence in understanding and producing data-led and technical content, supporting experts to communicate impactfully
- Experience working internationally, in a global organisation or with intercultural teams
- Good organisational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks independently
- Commitment to learning new skills, particularly digital technologies
- Attention to detail, reliably completing tasks to a high standard
- Ability to plan, schedule and manage priorities, and work well autonomously
- Ability to manage expectations and work well with different teams and stakeholders
- Strong administrative skills
- Fluent in English
- Experience working for a think tank, NGO or other not-for-profit organisation
- Knowledge of energy and climate
- Fluent in a European language, ideally Turkish, Polish or Czech
- Experience using tools like WordPress, CiviCRM and Meltwater
- Fascination with data-led storytelling, including data visualisation
- We operate a nine-day fortnight meaning our full-time staff are given every other Friday off work with no reduction in pay
- A minimum of 25 days holiday, plus public holidays and Christmas week-off
