Job Captain

Scope of the Position Major Responsibilities The Engineering Job Captain is primarily responsible for managing a team that provides design, engineering and drafting support for the company, project management team and fabrication facility in a manner focused on effective design, quality driven (error free) and in a timely manner. Provide clean, accurate and timely designs. Design where required both within engineering and in those areas where engineering influences or interacts with Project Managers, Purchasing, Fabrication, Estimating and Purchasing. Manage the activities of the 3rd party engineers and drafting team by maintaining a manpower schedule weekly of his/her assigned projects. Monitor and maintain the quality of drawing and ensuring compliance with Company standards. Major Responsibilities

1. Creating shop drawings for new and existing jobs based on architectural and structural information using company drafting standards.
2. Creation of job specific details for new and existing jobs, along with new details for existing products.
3. Provide support to the QC department on questions regarding production and installation of assigned projects.
4. Keeps track of working progress of assigned projects utilizing company standard monitoring standards.
5. Deal with architects, suppliers, and project managers in regard to technical questions on assigned projects.
6. Assist in supervising assigned drafting personnel.
7. Work with external third-party draftspersons and engineers in terms of communication and ensuring they maintain the quality standards put in place.
8. Design and maintain a design/detail library for reference purposes.
9. Advanced 2D AutoCAD 2011 and subsequent versions in the future.
10. Prepare layouts, concept/shop drawings for submission, ensuring they always pass QC protocol.
11. Generate fabrication drawings to be issued to the shop floor, prepare drawings and parts list as req’d.
12. Provide bills of material for supplies that are required to physically install the material in the field.
13. Attend design, project meetings, and project turnover meetings to ensure input information is correct.
14. Source parts and material from available literature, database, and suppliers. Assist with the preparation of proposals as required.
15. Conduct research into the feasibility and design of structural mechanics, components, and systems.
16. Preparing or evaluating technical proposals including RFI’s, SI’s, change orders etc. required.
17. Comprehensive understanding & accurate interpretation of architectural drawings and specifications
18. Build/contribute to library of extrusions and fabrication details and ensure this is managed/protected.
19. Proper storage of files – both paper and electronic.
20. Perform other tasks as required.

Education & Training - A recognized university or college diploma focused on construction, engineering, or architecture.

- Mechanical drafting diploma or equivalent is preferred.

- Specific training and excellent skills related to design and construction.

- Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office. Experience

1. Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering, design and drafting with 2D/3D AutoCAD or higher version.
2. Minimum 5 years exposure and experience within the glazing industry with a keen understanding of key suppliers, activities and construction methodology for glazing and metal panels
3. Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
4. Strong IT, software, and hardware management skills. Ability to manage/submit bids electronically.
5. Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, analytical, and a creative thinker.
6. Experience in leadership of subordinates and third-party subcontractors.

Decision Making & Problem Solving Decisions often affect the organization’s operational performance. Engineering activities are complex and often require alignment and finding inconsistencies between drawings and specifications. Supervisory & Management Responsibility Provides indirect supervision to Fabricating and Project Management. Liaise with Estimating, Project Management, and some employees doing skilled or difficult work. Broadly impacts many other positions through progressive flow/sharing of information.
