Corporate Law Clerk (Marine) McKeil Marine is seeking a highly organized, professional, and detail-oriented Corporate Law Clerk (Marine) , preferably with experience in the marine, insurance, or legal/paralegal sectors. The successful candidate will oversee contract management, claims handling, and incident reporting processes, working closely with teams such as Commercial, Operations, and Operational Risk Management. This position reports directly to the CFO. The role is dynamic, requiring strong multitasking, prioritization, and confidence to challenge norms. It offers growth as a change agent and demands agility to adapt to shifting priorities and expectations. Skills and Attributes
- Draft, review manage complex contracts for shipping, chartering, marine services, and contracts of affreightment, ensuring alignment with BIMCO standards, ECTOA guidelines, marine insurance requirements, and relevant industry regulations.
- Develop and amend project-specific agreements (e.G., charter parties, service agreements, joint ventures), clarifying obligations, liabilities, and risk mitigation for high-stakes marine projects.
- Address legal and compliance challenges in marine transportation, including demurrage claims, laytime disputes, and force majeure provisions, leveraging industry-standard terms.
- Collaborate with external legal counsel, insurance brokers, and regulatory authorities to resolve disputes, manage claims, and mitigate marine liabilities, providing concise risk updates to leadership.
- Mitigate project risks by ensuring contracts address key elements such as cargo liabilities, seaworthiness, and time-bar provisions.
- Stay current with maritime law, international shipping standards, and technological advancements through targeted seminars, training, and professional development.
- Provide strategic insights on complex projects by integrating operational, legal, and regulatory requirements through cross-functional collaboration.
- Oversee compliance in vessel operations, port security, maritime liens, vessel mortgages, and salvage claims.
- Maintain a centralized repository for project documentation, ensuring security, version control, and adherence to compliance milestones.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field (paralegal certification preferred).
- 5-7 years in a legal support role, preferably in contract management, with experience in maritime statutes, case law, and international conventions (e.G., Hague-Visby Rules, SOLAS, MARPOL, UNCLOS).
- Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented environment.
- Proven capacity to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- High level of professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
