Ngā kawenga | About the role We have an exciting opportunity to join our Executive Leadership Team as DCE People and Capability, leading a group of over 500 FTE. You will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of our People Plan. You will play a crucial role in attracting and retaining the right people, providing them with opportunities to grow and develop their careers, and building our organisational capacity and capabilities. With a strong, geographically dispersed, leadership team, you will be an exceptional leader of leaders who empowers your people to perform at their best. At Department of Corrections - Ara Poutama Aotearoa, our success is achieved through our people. The People & Capability group actively seeks and supports great talent, fostering a skilled and capable workforce dedicated to delivering positive outcomes for people in our care and the community. We support a team of 10,000 people working in a range of disciplines including custody, community corrections, psychology, nursing and corporate. In this pivotal role, you will lead on setting and implementing our employment relations approach, maintaining key relationships with unions, and influencing and supporting other Justice sector and public service agencies. You will play a key role in leading and supporting the change required as we continue to deliver better outcomes under Hōkai Rangi. You will lead a large specialist team of tier-three Directors across People and Capability, Employee Relations, People Operations, Communication and Government Services, Office of the DCE and Talent and Leadership. Department of Corrections - Ara Poutama Aotearoa is one of New Zealand's largest government departments, focused on the pursuit of oranga – the wellbeing of people. You will be a member of an executive that has focused their team building on the principles of Lencioni's five dysfunctions of team. You will be invited to bring a challenging, curious, and critical thinking mindset. Qualifications and Experience: You'll bring the following with you to the role:
  • Experience in building and leading a high performing management team with demonstrated experience in working as trusted business partners.
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills, using these to enrol, connect, engage, inform and negotiate successfully within a range of different environments.
  • Proven experience and success in transforming, leading and shaping an organisational culture towards a more humanistic, caring, values-led, resilient and learning culture.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relations internally and with external agencies and stakeholder groups, in particular unions.
  • Strong risk management capability and awareness.
