Overview

We are seeking a Geological / Geophysical Data Scientist to join the Digital Transformation Group within the Geological Operations Department (GLOD). The Digital Transformation Group (DTG) delivers a unified approach to streamline geological digital strategies, enhance efficiency by transforming unstructured data into digital formats, implement novel technologies, leverage machine learning capabilities, and create innovative workflows to produce structured and standardized data. This endeavor involves collaboration with various exploration-focused entities. Our ultimate goal is to evolve from fragmented automation of discrete phases within geological operations towards establishing a comprehensive, intelligent, and real-time digital ecosystem where all geological data and insights are digitized, seamlessly transmitted, secured, and readily available to all Upstream stakeholders. As a Geological / Geophysical Data Scientist, you will be responsible for data gathering, cleaning and visualization for structured & unstructured data, perform statistical hypothesis and complex analysis of structured & unstructured data, and develop complex data models and algorithms customized for specific scenarios on data linked to geological operations.

Key Responsibilities

As a successful candidate you will be required to perform the following:
  1. Collaborating with subject matter experts to establish robust data models and benchmarks while coordinating with the Exploration Geospatial & Data Management Solutions Division to develop effective data migration plans to centralized databases.
  2. Working with the Exploration Applications Support Department to architect efficient data loading processes and propose state-of-the-art methodologies for enhanced data visualization and analytical capabilities.
  3. Identifying and resolving discrepancies or inaccuracies within datasets.
  4. Developing sophisticated predictive analyses employing statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence principles to forecast outcomes based on existing trends.
  5. Providing expert counsel during the creation and assessment of machine learning frameworks.
  6. Designing intuitive data visualizations aimed at presenting intricate findings to senior leadership effectively.
  7. Testing, refining, and optimizing predictive model deployments to guarantee consistent performance and precision.
  8. Defining key data-centric activities and upholding rigorous standards for both data governance and information security protocols.
  9. Facilitating cross-functional education and skill-sharing sessions amongst data scientists spanning diverse competency levels.

Minimum Requirements

As a successful candidate you will hold a:
  1. Bachelor degree in Geosciences from an accredited university.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of experience in spearheading geology and geophysics (G&G) data projects, encompassing at least two to three years of experience in advanced data analytics and visualization initiatives aligned with digital transformation objectives.
  3. Proven expertise in crafting data strategies, governing data practices, and enforcing data compliance across the Oil & Gas Upstream sector.
  4. Knowledge of programming languages such as R, Java, Visual Studio Code, or Python.
  5. Strong practical understanding of statistical concepts, covering linear algebra, hypothesis testing, probability distributions, regression analysis, maximum likelihood estimation methods, among others (utilizing platforms like DSIS, SQL Developer, and SPSS).
  6. Familiarity with popular data visualization suites like Tableau, Power BI, Spotfire, or Matplotlib.
  7. Skilled in addressing data inconsistencies using database query languages such as SQL or DSDQ.
