Technical Principal Engineer (Bridges)

Location: Cape Town & Pretoria REPORTS TO: Functional Manager PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE This position involves professional input to a range of projects including large multidisciplinary projects. Duties include leading the functional group’s aspects of SMEC projects to ensure that these are technically sound. Provide specialist professional services to clients of the functional group. This includes bidding for work, participation in multi-disciplinary design/project teams and management of projects. Take stewardship of special group wide tasks assigned. RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide high quality professional advice
2. Identify and provide solutions to challenging engineering problems
3. Act as a technical resource as well as Project Manager as and when required
4. Ensure that projects are completed on time and on budget
5. Train and supervise the development of staff
6. Manage clients and maintain client satisfaction
7. Prepare tender proposals
8. Maintain corporate knowledge of financial and management requirements
9. Develop alternative professional solutions to be competitive in the market and be at the forefront of cutting edge technology
10. Technical and financial management of projects
11. Assist the Functional Group with obtaining and maintaining the required resources and the technical know-how to undertake relevant projects
12. Undertake assessments, analysis and design
13. Take an active interest in continuously enhancing self and group knowledge and to be familiar with the majority of relevant software that SMEC utilises
14. Strictly adhere to SMEC’s Management System (MS), quality standards and HSE procedures
15. Perform monthly financial reporting tasks as required by line manager
16. Input into the project budgets and project finance

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

1. Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from accredited university/college
2. Minimum 15 years of practical experience in the relevant discipline
3. Relevant professional memberships
4. Ability to identify and provide solutions to challenging engineering problems
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills
6. Project management and leadership skills
7. Ability to use analytical tools including commercial software
8. Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
9. Knowledge of obligations under the current SMEC MS
10. Sound knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA)
