Looking to take the next step in your leadership career? Interested in the challenge and variety of a regional port? We have a permanent opportunity available within the Maritime Group based in the Tauranga District Port for a Senior Customs Officer (SCO G1). As a Senior Customs Officer in the Tauranga District Port team, you will be providing coaching, mentoring and development of our people. On a day-to-day basis you will be working as part of a team who deliver a variety of core Customs functions. You will share being on-call for weekend and out of hours work. You'll provide direction and support to your colleagues and undertake coaching and mentoring. There may also be an opportunity for you to act up as Supervising Customs Officers for short periods of time to cover leave. This role is a critical position for supporting the District Port team. You will have a commitment to continually developing yourself and others, living our values and role modelling Customs' leadership principles. As part of the wider Maritime Group and in collaboration with the Port Manager, based in our Tauranga office, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Process passengers/crew and goods in/out of Aotearoa which can include search activities
  • Facilitate legitimate trade and travel, collect import and export data
  • Intercept contraband (such as drugs and weapons), investigate and prosecute offences
  • Inspect cargo and mail, assess and collect duty/GST on imports
  • Conduct and lead operational activity within the Port and Maritime environments
  • Lead business discovery within the Port and Maritime environments - understanding the supply chain and supply chain risks and vulnerabilities will be a critical function with the maritime group
To be successful in this role you will need to be able to demonstrate:
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring others
  • Understanding/awareness of operations in a District Port would be helpful
  • Problem solving and decision-making capability, including the ability to identify and analyse problems, manage and/or mitigate risks and implement innovative solutions
  • Working knowledge of the legislation relevant to Customs work, Customs procedures and policies, border protection methods and search and investigation techniques
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills - ability to communicate effectively verbally (and in writing) with wide ranging audiences
  • Ability to build, maintain and enhance successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Hours of work involve shifts to provide 7 days/nights a week coverage, and you will also be rostered for on-call work out of hours and at weekends. The salary band for this role is $67,008 - $83,874. Mid-range for this role is $76,623. There is also an additional allowance of $10,043 for rostered shift work.   • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident
  • Residing in New Zealand at the time of application
  • Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years*
  • Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment, drug test and have a clear Police record.
*If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
