The National Gallery of Ireland (‘the Gallery’) is Ireland’s major national cultural institution devoted to the collection and care of fine art. Comprising almost 17,000 paintings, drawings, watercolours, miniatures, prints, sculpture and decorative arts, the institution's extensive holdings include masterpieces by many of the most celebrated figures in the history of western European art. In addition, the Gallery houses the most representative collection of historic Irish art. Funded mainly by the State, the Gallery employs more than 180 staff and provides free access to the public 361 days a year. In 2022, the Gallery received numerous awards and accreditations. These included the Triple Lock Standard, which recognises Irish charities that have achieved excellence in governance, financial reporting, transparency and ethical fundraising. The Gallery wishes to recruit a permanent Curator of Irish Art Post 1900 . The overall responsibility of this post is to care for, research and interpret the Gallery’s collection of Irish Art produced after 1900, and particularly after 1922. Reporting to the Head Curator the Curator of Irish Art Post 1900 Art will:

  • Ensure that the collection of Irish art post 1900 is displayed to the highest standards
  • Research and publish on Irish art post 1900
  • Keep abreast of current scholarly research in this and related fields
  • Promote the collection at home and abroad
  • Research and recommend potential acquisitions and loans
  • Carry out provenance and due diligence research
  • Provide insurance valuations for works in the collection
  • Propose and curate exhibitions that showcase and/or contextualise Irish art post 1900, working closely with the Collections & Exhibition Services team to ensure successful delivery of exhibition projects and display
  • Work closely and collaboratively with staff across the five Departments in the Collections & Research Division, in particular the Head Curator who is responsible for Irish Art pre-1900 and the Curator of the Centre for the Study of Irish Art
  • In collaboration with the Gallery’s Conservation team, prioritise and propose works for conservation treatment, and contribute to scientific research initiatives
  • Ensure that the information on Irish art post 1900 in the collection is up-to-date (on the Gallery’s website, labels and the collection management system)
  • Make the collection accessible through lectures, publications and digital engagement by contributing to the public programme
  • Respond to queries from the public, external specialists and arrange visits and inspections where appropriate
  • Maintain and develop close professional relationships with colleagues from other galleries and museums in Ireland and internationally and identify and develop opportunities for partnerships
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with academics, private collectors, artists, dealers, auction house staff and other relevant contacts and stakeholders
  • Liaise with and provide information to colleagues in the Communications team for publicity, press and the website and social media
  • Work with the Development team on funding proposals
  • Maintain relationships with donors and patrons and build relationships with potential donors and patrons
  • Represent the Gallery nationally and internationally
  • Partake in and enhance their own professional development
  • Play a full and collaborative role in the activities of the Curatorial Department
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned
