Research and Data Management - Senior ScientistThe Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Senior Scientist, Research and Data Management Sector. In consultation with the Director of Research and Data Management, the Senior Scientist will lead in the development of a First Nations data support as well as surveillance system, address questions from First Nations leadership, communities in Ontario and inform other sectors within the Chiefs of Ontario on data issues and protection. The Senior Scientist will also be a senior member of Research and Data Management (RDM) team.Location: Hybrid - Remote and Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office, 468 Queen St East, Toronto OntarioPolicy Duties and Responsibilities:Surveillance: Establish regional processes for ongoing monitoring of health and wellness (including development and implementation of meaningful metrics related to health and wellness), develop processes to support community-level surveillanceBuild research infrastructure: Write policies, develop processes and protocols, monitor and improve the quality of research program (including defining and reporting on metrics of a successful research program)Data stewardship: Ensure management of existing and new sources of First Nations data by COO and its partners aligns with OCAP principlesEstablish and extend research collaborations and networks: Serve as team member and/or co-investigator in studies led by others, and build COO's reputation as a competent and reliable partner, and where delegated represent COO in external networks and projectsGenerate research projects based on First Nations research priorities; inquiries from COO and/or community leadershipProvide technical research expertise as required: Write successful proposals for funding, design effective studies, analyze data, facilitate interpretation of data analyses, prepare reports and publications, and collaborate on knowledge translation activities.Recruitment and mentoring: Identify and recommend staff positions necessary for a successful research program, lead and mentor multidisciplinary research program teamsTravel will be requiredDoctoral (PhD) degree in epidemiology, public health, biological science or medicine, in analytical science or medicine including postdoctoral work; with 5 to 10 years' experienceUnderstanding of and desire to advance First Nations data sovereigntyCommitment to listening to and learning from First Nations knowledge and principles in order to expand the impact of First Nations knowledge on research and data management practices.Broad technical expertise in surveillance, epidemiology, research and data managementAt least 5 years of experience leading projects and performing researchExpertise in data analysis (quantitative and qualitative expertise preferred)Track record of publications and/or grant fundingSignificant scientific networkExperienced at leading and managing the research efforts of othersExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to self-direct as well as to work collaborativelyDriven towards constant improvement and lifelong learningAbility to translate research into useful policy and recommendationsSuccessful candidate must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and eligible to work in Canada.DURATION: January 2024 to March 31, 2025, with the possibly of renewal based on available funding.Send letter of application, resume and include 2 references marked confidential to: opportunities@coo.org Interviews will be held in Zoom.
