Head of department: social science

Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is recruiting for a head of department to lead its social science core. Applications are encouraged from individuals with completed specialist training, and PhD qualifications in a relevant field – or equivalent. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing operational strategic leadership for the social science technical track staff, which will encourage and promote scientific excellence and support the development of social science research at AHRI. The incumbent will develop and maintain innovative systems and policies that will support best practices in the scientific social science programme of work at AHRI and contribute to the implementation of the social science strategic research goals while supporting the capacity building of the technical track researchers engaged in social science research. The institute currently focuses on HIV, tuberculosis, emergent and neglected infections, and adolescent mental health. In all four areas, our research spans discovery and intervention. AHRI addresses critical questions, with the goal of impact on policy and practice in resource-limited settings and beyond. The successful candidate will be expected to lead by living AHRI’s values, which include collaboration, ubuntu, leadership, innovation, transformation, and excellence.
